Chapter 1 - THE FIRST MORNING

At 6:12 the next morning, Julian was still asleep downstairs.

Vanessa had apparently passed out on the sofa.

Elena stood in the bathroom with a towel around her shoulders and stared at what remained of her hair.

One side ended near her jaw.

The other hung below her shoulder.

Jagged.

Humiliating.

Intentional.

Then she picked up professional shears.

For twenty-seven minutes, Elena did what she had done for women thousands of times.

She corrected damage.

Not by pretending it had never happened.

By shaping what remained into something deliberate.

A sharp, elegant bob.

Clean at the jaw.

Soft layers.

Powerful.

When she finished, the woman in the mirror did not look ruined.

She looked awake.

Elena photographed the cut.

Then photographed the thick lock Julian had hacked off.

Bagged it.

Labeled it with date and time.

Her attorney, Monica Reyes, had told her two weeks earlier:

Document everything.

Elena had.

The affair.

Hotel receipts.

Messages.

Credit-card charges.

And last night?

Her home security system had recorded sound from the living room.

Julian had forgotten that.

At 7:04, Elena downloaded the audio.

Vanessa’s laugh.

Julian’s voice.

The sound of scissors.

Then something else.

Ten minutes after Elena went upstairs, Julian said:

“She has no idea the salon loan is tied to the house.”

Elena froze.

Vanessa replied:

“Does it matter? Once the merger closes, you’ll pay it off.”

Julian laughed.

“If the merger closes.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa:

“And if it doesn’t?”

Julian:

“Then Elena’s company takes the hit before I do.”

Elena replayed the sentence three times.

Her company.

Takes the hit.

She immediately called Monica.

“Julian used my salons for something.”

“What?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Do not confront him.”

“I won’t.”

“Can you access your business credit?”

“Yes.”

“Pull everything.”

Elena opened her business dashboard.

Three salons.

No obvious loan.

Then Monica asked:

“Any old LLCs?”

Elena stopped.

Five years earlier, Julian encouraged her to create a holding company.

Evelyn Beauty Holdings LLC.

He called it “more professional.”

Elena had barely used it.

She searched.

And found a loan.

$850,000.

Borrower:

Evelyn Beauty Holdings LLC.

Guarantor:

Elena Marquez-Hale.

Her signature sat at the bottom.

Elena had never signed it.

The lender authorization listed one additional contact.

Julian Hale.

And the collateral description included:

Business receivables.

Equipment.

And marital residence equity.

Elena stared at the screen.

Five days suddenly felt generous.

May you like

Because Julian had not merely humiliated his wife.

He had forged her name on an $850,000 loan.
