Chapter 5 - The Empress Reborn

Seventy-two hours later, the private medical suite inside the Mercer fortress was filled with the soft fragrance of fresh eucalyptus and white lilies.

Under the care of top pediatric trauma specialists and advanced regenerative physical therapy, my strength had returned with miraculous speed.

The deep purple contusions along my ribs had faded into faint golden shadows, and the color had fully returned to my cheeks.

Dr. Vance, the syndicate’s chief private physician, removed the final compression bandage from my torso.

“Your recovery is extraordinary, Miss Hawthorne,” Dr. Vance said respectfully, stepping back with a slight bow.

“Your vitals are completely stable, and the young ladies have gained half a pound each.”

“They are the healthiest infants in New England.”

I stood up from the examination table, walking over to the full-length mirror standing in the corner of the dressing suite.

Two elite stylists from Paris stood waiting beside a rolling rack of bespoke haute couture.

On the rack hung a custom-tailored power suit of midnight-blue velvet, adorned with subtle silver embroidery along the lapels that formed the ancient Hawthorne phoenix crest.

Beside it lay a pair of four-inch diamond-encrusted heels and a heavy platinum signet ring.

I ran my fingers across the soft velvet fabric, feeling the power and heritage woven into every single thread.

For five years, Julian had forced me to wear modest, shapeless dresses, constantly criticizing my appearance and telling me I was nothing more than a charity case he picked up from the docks.

He had systematically eroded my confidence, convincing me I was weak, helpless, and destined for servitude.

I slipped into the velvet suit.

The fabric hugged my silhouette with regal precision, accentuating the fierce, commanding posture I had suppressed for so long.

The stylists swept my dark hair into an intricate crown braid, highlighting the sharp lines of my jaw and the cold, unyielding determination burning in my eyes.

The heavy oak doors of the suite opened.

Silas Mercer walked into the room, dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo with a crisp white silk shirt and silver cufflinks.

He stopped in his tracks, his slate-gray eyes widening slightly as he took in the sight of me standing before the mirror.

A slow, appreciative smile touched his rugged lips.

“You look magnificent, Elena,” Silas murmured, his voice laced with deep admiration.

“The city has been waiting twenty-three years for the return of its rightful sovereign.”

“Where are we going, Silas?” I asked, slipping the Hawthorne signet ring onto my right index finger.

Silas stepped closer, offering me his arm with the refined courtesy of an ancient king.

“Tonight is the annual Boston Harbor Preservation Gala at the Quincy Grand Ballroom,” Silas said, his eyes glittering with lethal anticipation.

“Julian Croft and Corinne Delacroix have reserved the main stage to announce your ‘tragic postpartum passing’ and establish a fraudulent memorial trust in your name.”
