Chapter 12 - The Iron Tomb

Far away from the glittering lights of the city, the reality of Julian Croft’s new existence began inside the maximum-security wing of Cedar Junction State Penitentiary.

The heavy iron bars slammed shut with a deafening, final clang that reverberated down the cold concrete tier.

Julian sat on a thin, rusted metal bunk, wearing an oversized orange prison jumpsuit.

His broken knee was braced with cheap medical plastic, throbbing with relentless, agonizing pain in the damp air of the cellblock.

The door at the end of the tier opened, and the heavy, rhythmic footsteps of leather dress shoes echoed down the corridor.

The prison guards stepped back respectfully, allowing Silas Mercer to walk up to the bars of Julian’s cell.

Silas was dressed in an immaculate three-piece charcoal suit, looking like a dark god visiting the underworld.

Julian scrambled to his feet, gripping the cold iron bars with his trembling, calloused hands.

“Mercer…” Julian rasped, his voice hollow and broken.

“Did you come here to gloat? Did you come to kill me?!”

Silas stood calmly on the other side of the bars, looking at Julian with the total, terrifying indifference of a man looking at a speck of dust.

“Death is an easy escape, Julian,” Silas said softly, his deep baritone cutting through the prison chill.

“You will not die today.”

“You will spend the next forty-five years in this eight-by-ten concrete box.”

“You will wake up every morning to the sound of steel gates, and you will fall asleep every night knowing that the woman you threw into the snow owns every brick of the city you tried to rule.”

Silas pulled a photograph from his coat pocket and slid it through the bars, letting it flutter down to Julian’s feet.

It was a high-resolution photograph of Aurelia and Seraphina, healthy, radiant, and laughing in their sunlit nursery, wrapped in silk blankets.

“They will never know your name,” Silas whispered with absolute finality.

“They will grow up calling me father.”

“And they will rule an empire that will erase your memory from the history of this world.”

Julian fell to his knees on the filthy concrete floor, clutching the bars and screaming in frantic, impotent agony as Silas turned and walked away into the light.
