Chapter 2 - The Sovereign's Counterstrike

Silas Mercer did not rush toward the door.
He walked across the hardwood floor with the measured, terrifying grace of an apex predator closing in on a cornered wolf.
He stopped in front of the wall-mounted high-definition surveillance console beside the entryway.
On the glowing digital monitors, eight heavily armed men in black tactical gear were crowded outside the private elevator landing.
At the center of the squad stood Julian Croft.
He was dressed in a tailored charcoal overcoat, his golden hair slicked back, his handsome face twisted into an ugly mask of desperate, entitled rage.
He was holding a signed court document, waving it aggressively at the closed-circuit camera lens.
“I have an emergency custody order and an ex-parte writ of spousal recovery!” Julian screamed at the microphone.
“You have five seconds to surrender my wife, Mercer, or every federal agent in Massachusetts will raid this tower!”
Silas reached out with a single gloved finger and pressed the two-way intercom button.
“Julian,” Silas spoke, his voice smooth, resonant, and dripping with venomous amusement.
The men in the hallway froze instantly at the sound of the syndicate boss's voice.
Julian swallowed hard, his posture visibly stiffening as a flicker of ancient terror broke through his arrogant facade.
“Mercer…” Julian choked out, trying to steady his shaking voice.
“You have no jurisdiction here.”
“This is a domestic family matter.”
“Elena is legally incompetent, and those children are the direct heirs to Croft Enterprises.”
Silas let out a low, chilling laugh that sent goosebumps racing across my bare arms.
“Forty-eight hours ago, you threw those children onto the frozen asphalt beneath the Southeast Expressway,” Silas said with deadly, mathematical clarity.
“You kicked a bleeding mother in the ribs and left two newborn infants to suffocate in thirty-degree sleet.”
“You forfeited your title as a father the moment their skin touched the ice.”
“And you forfeited your life the moment you brought weapons to my threshold.”
Before Julian could utter another syllable, the elevator doors behind his tactical team chimed with a crisp chime.
The steel doors slid open, revealing twelve towering Mercer enforcers clad in full ballistic body armor, their automatic shotguns leveled at the backs of Julian’s men.
Simultaneously, the concealed service doors flanking the hallway snapped open, revealing Kaelen and three snipers with red laser sights painting Julian’s chest.
Julian’s mercenaries dropped their assault rifles to the floor in unison, raising their hands above their heads in terrified surrender.
“Drop the paper, Julian,” Silas commanded through the speaker.
Julian stood completely alone, his face turning an ash-gray shade of pure panic as six laser dots converged over his heart.
The legal document slipped from his paralyzed fingers, fluttering down to rest against the bloodstained boots of Silas’s lead enforcer.
“Kaelen,” Silas instructed coldly.
“Break his right knee.”
“Leave him on the sidewalk outside the precinct so the city can see how a Croft crawls when his money cannot save him.”

Through the monitor, I watched the sickening crunch as Kaelen’s heavy boot drove into Julian’s joint.
Julian let out a shrill, agonizing shriek of pain that echoed through the speakers before the transmission was cut to black.
