Chapter 3 - The Cradle of Fire

Silence settled over the penthouse once again, broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the nursery monitors.

Silas walked back to the medical bay, his expression softening as he looked into the transparent bassinet.

The twins had opened their bright blue eyes for the first time, looking up at the towering underworld kingpin without a trace of fear.

Silas slowly reached his large, scarred hand into the crib.

Aurelia, the smaller of the two, reached out with her tiny, perfect fingers and wrapped them tightly around Silas’s index finger.

A profound, unexpected tenderness passed over Silas’s rugged features.

This was a man who had built an empire through iron, blood, and merciless warfare.

Yet standing beside these fragile infants, his towering frame seemed like an impenetrable mountain shield guarding a sacred flame.

“They are strong, Elena,” Silas said softly, looking over at me.

“They fought through hypothermia that would have killed grown men.”

“They have the Hawthorne blood in their veins.”

I struggled to push myself up against the pillows, my body still shaking from the lingering trauma of the past three days.

“Why are you doing this for us, Silas?” I asked, searching his eyes for the hidden price.

“In my world, men like Julian only take.”

“They pretend to love you until they can drain your soul, and then they discard you in the gutter.”

“What do you want from me?”

Silas stepped closer to the edge of the bed, his dark gaze piercing straight through my defenses.

“Twenty-three years ago, when your father was murdered, my own father was wounded in the same attack trying to defend him,” Silas revealed, his voice deep and solemn.

“The Mercer family and the Hawthorne dynasty were never rivals, Elena.”

“That was a lie fabricated by the media to conceal our secret, hundred-year alliance.”

“My father made me swear a blood oath on his deathbed: if the Hawthorne heiress ever surfaced, I was to protect her with the entire military and financial might of the Mercer syndicate.”

He reached out, his warm thumb gently wiping away a stray tear running down my bruised cheek.

“I do not want your money, Elena.”

“I do not want your corporate shares.”

“I want Julian Croft and his entire corrupt empire turned to dust.”

“And I want to see you and your daughters sit upon the throne that was stolen from you.”

Seraphina let out a small, sweet coo from the bassinet, kicking her tiny legs against the fleece blanket.

I looked from my innocent daughters to the man standing beside me, feeling a spark of fierce, unyielding fire ignite within my shattered heart.
