Chapter 9 - The Shadow Mistress

In Federal Holding Cell 4B at the Earle Cabell Federal Building, Julianna Mercer was cracking under the immense pressure of federal racketeering charges.

Stripped of her designer blazer and jewelry, wearing an oversized gray jumpsuit, she sat across from my father and Federal Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins.

"Julianna, you are looking at twenty years for federal mortgage fraud, wire fraud, and falsifying state notary documents," Prosecutor Jenkins said calmly, sliding a legal plea agreement across the table.

"Furthermore, because the fraudulent documents were executed to advance a scheme that resulted in the near-fatal injury of a minor, you are eligible for sentence enhancement under the Domestic Violence and Child Protection Act."

Julianna looked at the document, her hands trembling so violently that the paper rattled in the quiet room.

"I didn't know Marcus was going to hurt Chloe!" Julianna sobbed, her mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks.

"Marcus told me Olivia was an abusive, neglectful mother who was holding the family property hostage out of spite!"

"He told me the quitclaim deed was completely legal and that Olivia had verbally agreed to the transfer!"

"Did you notarize that deed without Olivia Vance being physically present in your office, Ms.

Mercer?" my father asked, his piercing eyes boring into her soul.

"Yes...

yes, I did," Julianna confessed, burying her face in her hands.

"Marcus paid me a fifty-thousand-dollar cash fee and promised me a ten percent equity stake in the high-speed rail development."

"He forged her signature right in front of me at my dining room table, and I pressed my state notary seal over it."

"Where are the electronic communications, Julianna?" Prosecutor Jenkins demanded.

"Every text message, every voice note, and every email Marcus ever sent me is backed up on an encrypted cloud server," Julianna revealed eagerly, desperate to save herself from decades in prison.

"I have the voice recordings from yesterday morning."

"Marcus sent me an audio message at 11:15 AM saying: 'Mom is holding the kid's breath hostage right now; Olivia will break before lunch.'"

Prosecutor Jenkins closed her pen with a sharp, definitive click.

"You just traded a twenty-year sentence for five years of federal probation and full state cooperation."

"Sign the statement, Ms.

Mercer."
