Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Syndicate

Within two hours of Marcus’s forced removal from the hospital, my father’s forensic accounting team set up a mobile command station in the hospital’s conference lounge.
Three top-tier forensic auditors and a digital intelligence specialist sat surrounded by glowing monitors and mountains of bank ledgers.
"We just penetrated the shell company network, Judge Sterling," announced David Ross, the senior forensic auditor, tapping his mechanical keyboard.
"Marcus Vance wasn't operating alone; he formed a corporate entity named 'Apex Meridian Holdings' registered in Nevis and the British Virgin Islands."
"The co-signers on the account are Beatrice Vance and a high-profile Dallas real estate broker named Julianna Mercer," David explained, pulling up corporate registry documents.
"Julianna Mercer is Marcus’s former college girlfriend and his current private business partner."
I walked over to the glowing screen, my heart pounding against my ribs as I saw photographic evidence of Marcus and Julianna entering a boutique hotel in downtown Austin two weeks prior.
"They used Apex Meridian to borrow twenty-two million dollars from a predatory hard-money lender," David continued, highlighting a series of fraudulent wire transfers.
"To secure the loan, they pledged the entirety of the Willow Creek estate, using a forged signature of Olivia Vance notarized by Julianna Mercer."
"The notary stamp is completely fraudulent," I whispered, recognizing the sloppy imitation of my handwriting on the digital deed.
"It gets significantly worse, Olivia," my father said gravely, handing me a sealed document stamped by the Texas Department of Insurance.
"Fourteen days ago, Marcus executed a supplemental private life insurance policy on six-year-old Chloe Vance through a boutique Lloyd's of London underwriter."
"The policy value is five million dollars, with an accidental death rider that doubles the payout in the event of unforeseen environmental or medical misadventure."
"The sole beneficiary designated on the policy is not you, Olivia."
"It is Beatrice Vance, acting as trustee for Apex Meridian Holdings."
The air was sucked from my lungs as the sheer, demonic monstrosity of their plot crystallized in my mind.
They hadn't just used Chloe’s medical crisis as leverage to force me to sign the property deed.
If Chloe had died on that scorching stone walkway before I arrived, they would have collected ten million dollars in tax-free insurance proceeds to pay off their Cayman loan sharks.
My daughter’s life was nothing more than an insurance contingency plan to cover their fraudulent debts.
"They planned her murder, Dad," I whispered, tears of cold fury turning to pure, crystalline resolution.

"They were going to let my baby die and call it a tragic asthma attack."
"They will not see the light of day for the rest of their natural lives," my father vowed, dialing the personal mobile number of the Dallas County District Attorney.
