Chapter 1 - The Call of Treason

The vibrating screen in my trembling palm felt like a live wire ready to detonate my entire existence.

I snatched the blue inhaler from Beatrice's tunic pocket with a primal fury that made the older woman stumble back against the stone balustrade.

"Give that back, you ungrateful wretch!" Beatrice hissed, her voice cracking as her polished facade shattered in the blazing Dallas heat.

I completely ignored her, dropping to my knees beside Chloe and priming the canister with frantic, shaking hands.

"Breathe, baby, breathe for Mommy," I sobbed, pressing the mouthpiece between my daughter's blue-tinted lips and depressing the valve twice.

The fine aerosol mist hissed into her constricted airway, and Chloe let out a violent, hacking gasp as life fought its way back into her small body.

With my free hand, I swiped the green accept icon on my phone and activated the speakerphone.

"Olivia, where the hell are you?" Marcus’s voice boomed through the tiny speaker, laced with an icy, corporate impatience that sent chills down my spine.

"Did my mother get you to sign the quitclaim deed for the estate yet?" he demanded without even asking about his daughter.

"The investment partners are waiting in the boardroom, and if those property transfer documents aren't stamped by three, the entire development merger falls through."

The silence in the sweltering courtyard became deafening, broken only by Chloe's ragged wheezing on the hot stone tiles.

Harold looked down at the phone, his face draining of all color as he realized his son had just incriminated himself in cold blood.

"Your six-year-old daughter was suffocating on your parents' walkway while you were checking on property documents, Marcus," I whispered, my voice vibrating with lethal calm.

There was a momentary pause on the other end of the line, the sound of shuffling papers abruptly halting in Marcus’s high-rise office.

"Don't be dramatic, Olivia, Beatrice told me Chloe only had a mild cough from playing in the garden," Marcus replied smoothly, attempting to pivot into his well-rehearsed gaslighting tone.

"Just sign the damn papers and bring them downtown so we can secure our financial future."

"She didn't have a cough, Marcus," I said, tears of pure rage burning tracks down my cheeks.

"Your mother deliberately hid her rescue inhaler inside her pocket and left her to die in ninety-five-degree heat."

"She's exaggerating, Marcus!" Beatrice screamed toward the phone, clawing at her amber linen tunic.

"The child threw a tantrum because I wouldn't let her play with her tablet, so I put her in time-out to teach her respect!"

In the distance, the wailing scream of emergency sirens pierced through the heavy Texas afternoon air, growing louder with every passing second.

"You hear that, Marcus?" I asked, looking straight into Beatrice's panicked eyes.

"That's the sound of your entire life crumbling into dust."

I ended the call, scooped Chloe into my arms, and stood ready for war.
