Chapter 2 - The Red Siren Rescue

Two paramedic units and three marked Dallas Police Department cruisers tore into the driveway, tires skidding across the white crushed gravel.

Paramedics leaped from the back of the lead ambulance with trauma kits and a pediatric oxygen mask before the vehicle had even completely halted.

"Over here! She suffered a severe asthmatic crisis and heat exhaustion!" I screamed, running toward them with Chloe clutched tightly against my chest.

A female paramedic named Sarah caught us in a practiced, gentle grip, immediately securing the high-flow oxygen mask over Chloe’s pale nose and mouth.

"Heart rate is one hundred and sixty, oxygen saturation is down to eighty-two percent," Sarah shouted to her partner as they strapped Chloe onto the gurney.

"We need a continuous nebulizer treatment of albuterol and an intravenous line of solumedrol right now."

Officer Ramirez, a seasoned Dallas patrolman, approached the veranda with his hand resting cautiously on his utility belt.

"Ma'am, the 911 dispatcher reported a medical emergency compounded by the intentional withholding of life-saving medication," he stated, looking between Beatrice and me.

"That is an outrageous lie from an emotionally unstable daughter-in-law!" Beatrice interrupted loudly, smoothing her hair and attempting to summon her high-society charm.

"My husband and I are prominent members of the Dallas Historical Society; we were simply babysitting our granddaughter while she had a mild fainting spell."

"Officer, check that woman’s pocket," I said, pointing directly at Beatrice while holding up the recovered inhaler inside a clean plastic ziplock bag from my purse.

"This is my daughter’s prescription inhaler, which I had to physically pry out of Beatrice’s pocket while Chloe lay unconscious on the pavement."

"There are also home security cameras mounted right there on the garage eaves," I added, pointing to the high-definition lenses overlooking the courtyard.

"They will show that Beatrice sat on that porch for forty minutes drinking iced tea while my daughter suffocated on the walkway."

Harold’s knees gave out, and he collapsed heavily onto the wicker patio bench, burying his face in his trembling hands.

"Beatrice, you told me she was just pouting by the roses," Harold moaned, his voice cracking with horrifying realization.

"You told me she was faking it to get her mother's attention!"

Beatrice glared at her husband with venomous fury.

"Shut your cowardly mouth, Harold, before you ruin everything we've built!"

Officer Ramirez’s expression hardened as he unclipped a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical vest.

"Mrs.

Vance, step down off the porch and keep your hands where I can see them."

"You are being detained pending an investigation into aggravated child endangerment and domestic assault."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Beatrice's manicured wrists, the ambulance doors slammed shut, and the siren screamed toward Dallas Children's Hospital.

I climbed into the passenger cabin beside my daughter, watching Beatrice thrash against the police cruiser in the rearview mirror.
