Chapter 10 - Chloe's Testimony

Three days later, Chloe was officially discharged from Dallas Children's Hospital with clean pulmonary function tests and a bright, radiant smile.

Dressed in a brand-new yellow floral dress that my father had bought her, she held my hand tightly as we walked into the private chambers of State District Court Judge Amanda Ramirez.

Judge Ramirez had cleared the courtroom of all public spectators and press to conduct a formal in-camera evidentiary hearing.

Chloe sat comfortably in a large leather armchair beside a trained therapy golden retriever named Barnaby, petting the dog’s soft ears as she spoke into the court microphone.

"Chloe, sweetheart, do you know what it means to tell the truth?" Judge Ramirez asked gently from her bench.

"Yes, Your Honor," Chloe answered in her sweet, clear voice.

"Telling the truth means saying what really happened without making up any stories."

"And what really happened at Grandma’s house, Chloe?"

"Grandma told me that Daddy was very angry with Mommy," Chloe recounted, looking at the judge with pure, unvarnished honesty.

"She said that Daddy told her to hide my blue inhaler in her pocket so Mommy would have to give Daddy the big farm."

"Did you ask Grandma for help when you couldn't breathe?"

"I begged Grandma," Chloe whispered, her eyes filling with tears that made my heart shatter all over again.

"I told Grandma my chest was on fire and that I was seeing black spots in the sky."

"Grandma told me to stop being a dramatic baby and pushed me out the door onto the hot rocks."

"She said that if I died, Daddy would get even more money to buy a new boat."

Judge Ramirez closed her eyes for three long seconds, taking a deep, shuddering breath as the sheer depravity of the testimony echoed through the vaulted room.

"Thank you, Chloe," Judge Ramirez said softly, wiping a solitary tear from her own cheek.

"You are the bravest little girl in the entire state of Texas."

"You may step outside with your grandfather now."

As my father escorted Chloe out to the private waiting room, Judge Ramirez turned her gaze toward the defense attorneys representing Marcus and Beatrice.

"Counselors, your clients will not be receiving bail."

"They are a clear, present, and monstrous danger to society."
