Chapter 13 - The Collapse of Beatrice

On the fourth day of the trial, Beatrice Vance insisted on taking the witness stand in her own defense against the desperate pleas of her legal counsel.

She hobbled to the wooden witness box, clutching the railing with frail, handcuffed hands, attempting to project the image of a persecuted, misunderstood grandmother.

"Mrs.

Vance, did you or did you not intentionally withhold Chloe Vance’s rescue inhaler on the afternoon of July 18th?" Prosecutor Cole asked, stepping directly in front of the witness stand.

"I was teaching that spoiled, undisciplined child a lesson!" Beatrice exploded suddenly, her aristocratic facade shattering into a terrifying, unhinged shriek that shocked the entire courtroom.

"Her mother came from old money and thought she was better than us!"

"Olivia never showed me the proper respect! She treated my son like an ordinary man when he was destined for greatness!"

"So you left your granddaughter to die on the scorching pavement to punish her mother?" Cole pressed, his voice rising with righteous indignation.

"She wasn't going to die! She was just wheezing!" Beatrice screamed, her face turning a deep, dangerous crimson as she slammed her cuffed fists against the witness desk.

"That forty-eight million dollars belonged to the Vance family name!"

"Olivia’s father had everything, and we had to beg for scraps while Marcus worked eighteen hours a day to keep up appearances!"

"That little brat should have been grateful that we gave her a roof over her head, and if she had to suffer a little bit to save her father's empire, that was her duty as a Vance!"

The entire gallery erupted into angry shouts and gasps of pure disgust.

Judge Ramirez slammed her heavy wooden gavel down five times with deafening force.

"Silence in this court!" Judge Ramirez ordered, glaring down at Beatrice with absolute judicial condemnation.

"The defendant will step down from the witness stand immediately."

Marcus buried his face in his cuffed hands, letting out a dry, pathetic sob as he realized his mother’s narcissistic explosion had just guaranteed them both a lifetime behind prison bars.
