Chapter 9 - The Man Who Controlled the Family

Alex drove back to Manhattan without saying a word.

Elena sat beside him, holding the photograph of the baby. The discovery had changed everything. Alex wasn't merely the heir of a powerful family. He was the son of a man who had destroyed lives to protect his reputation.

And Elena wasn't simply the woman who had inherited an empire.

She was the daughter of the woman who had tried to expose him.

When they reached Ashford Tower, Alex finally spoke.

“I want to confront him.”

“Not yet.”

“He murdered my mother.”

“We have Evelyn's testimony, but we still need evidence connecting him to the fire and the forged adoption records.”

“How much more evidence do you need?”

“Enough to make sure he can't buy his way out of this.”

Alex struck the steering wheel.

“I spent my entire life trying to become the kind of man he would respect.”

Elena looked at him.

“Then don't become him.”

The words silenced him.

That evening, they attended Richard's charity luncheon as planned.

The ballroom was filled with politicians, executives, and donors. Richard stood near the stage, accepting praise for his generosity.

He greeted Elena with a warm smile.

“Miss Ashford. I'm delighted you could join us.”

“I'm sure you are.”

His smile remained perfectly in place.

“And Alex. I trust you've reconsidered your recent decisions.”

Alex held his gaze.

“Not a chance.”

Richard's eyes narrowed.

Elena noticed the exchange.

Richard wasn't worried about the inheritance or the scandal. He was worried that Alex might stop obeying him.

During the luncheon, Elena slipped away to examine a display of historical photographs. One showed Richard with Arthur Ashford outside the private clinic, the day before the fire.

A small inscription beneath the image read:

The Ashford-W hitmore Foundation, celebrating ten years of partnership.

The photograph had been taken by a journalist who later disappeared.

Elena photographed the inscription and sent it to Margaret.

Then a hand closed around her arm.

Richard stood behind her.

“You've been asking dangerous questions,” he murmured.

Elena didn't pull away.

“Only questions you should have answered years ago.”

His expression hardened.

“Your grandfather was a sentimental fool. He believed every problem could be solved with honesty.”

“And you believe every problem can be solved with money.”

“Money is useful. Fear is more useful.”

He leaned closer.

“Walk away from this investigation. Take your inheritance. Enjoy your life. You have no idea how many people will suffer if you continue.”

Elena met his gaze.

“Are you threatening me?”

“I'm offering you a chance to remain safe.”

Across the room, Alex watched them.

Richard noticed.

He smiled and released Elena's arm.

“Enjoy the luncheon.”

Then he walked toward the stage.

A moment later, the lights dimmed.

The host announced a special presentation honoring the Whitmore family's charitable legacy.

A screen descended behind Richard.

The first image appeared.

It showed Elena's mother leaving the private clinic hours before the fire.

The second showed Richard entering the building.

The third showed a man carrying a metal case through a back exit.

Richard's smile vanished.

May you like

Because the man in the third photograph was Alex's grandfather.

And the case he carried bore the seal of the Ashford family.
