Chapter 13 - The Aunt Who Wanted Everything

Vivian Ashford arrived at the family estate that afternoon dressed in black silk and diamonds.
She looked every inch the grieving relative.
She even carried white lilies for the portrait of Arthur Ashford in the entrance hall.
Elena waited for her in the library.
“You wanted to see me?” Vivian asked, kissing the air beside her cheek.
“Yes.”
“Then let's not waste time. The press is making ridiculous accusations about Richard, and the board needs reassurance that the Ashford empire remains stable.”
Elena placed the bank transfer on the desk.
Vivian glanced at it.
For the first time, her polished expression faltered.
“Where did you get this?”
“From the same records you thought had been destroyed.”
Vivian slowly removed her gloves.
“Your grandfather was becoming paranoid in his final years. He believed everyone was plotting against him.”
“Did he imagine your signature, too?”
“You don't understand the circumstances.”
“Then explain them.”
Vivian walked toward the fireplace.
“Richard was going to ruin us. He had debts, political enemies, and people who wanted him gone. He promised that if I helped him reorganize the foundation, he would protect the family.”
“So you helped him hide the stolen money.”
“I protected the Ashford name.”
“You helped him destroy my mother's investigation.”
Vivian turned sharply.
“Your mother was a fool! She thought exposing Richard would make the world a better place. She never understood that the world belongs to people willing to do what others won't.”
Elena felt a cold clarity settle over her.
“You knew about the clinic.”
Vivian said nothing.
“You knew Richard forced Elizabeth to surrender her baby. You knew he destroyed the records. And when my grandfather tried to expose him, you helped silence him.”
“I did what was necessary.”
“For money?”
“For survival!”
Vivian's voice cracked.
“You have no idea what it's like to watch a family empire collapse. Everything your grandfather built could have disappeared. I had spent my entire life protecting this family, and Catherine came along and inherited the one thing I wanted most.”
Elena stared at her.
“You mean the estate?”
Vivian's expression hardened.
“I was Arthur's daughter, too. I deserved half of everything.”
“You could have asked for it.”
“He would never have given it to me.”
“So you helped Richard steal it.”
Vivian stepped closer.
“You are young. You can still make this disappear. Sign over the controlling shares to me, and I will ensure the board protects you.”
Elena almost laughed.
“You're offering to protect me from the consequences of your own crimes.”
“I'm offering you a future.”
“No. You're offering me the same prison you built for yourself.”
Vivian's face twisted.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a small pistol.
“Give me the documents.”
Elena didn't move.
“You're making another mistake.”
Vivian's hand trembled.
“Don't test me.”
Behind the library door, footsteps approached.
Vivian raised the gun.
The door opened.
Alex stood in the doorway, his arm still bandaged.
“Put it down, Aunt Vivian.”
Vivian spun toward him.
For one terrible moment, the gun pointed directly at his chest.
Then sirens sounded outside.
Federal agents flooded the hallway.
Vivian dropped the weapon.
As they handcuffed her, she began to laugh.
“You think you've won?”
Elena watched her aunt being led away.
“What else is there?”
Vivian turned at the doorway.
“Ask your grandfather why he left you the entire empire instead of dividing it between his daughters.”
Elena froze.
Vivian smiled bitterly.
“Because the Ashford empire wasn't supposed to belong to you.”
She leaned closer as the agents pulled her away.
“It was supposed to belong to the child your mother never gave birth to.”
Elena's heart stopped.
Catherine had been her mother in every way that mattered.
But the words suggested something impossible.
If Catherine hadn't given birth to Elena, and Elizabeth was her biological mother, why had Arthur made her the sole heir?
May you like
Unless the inheritance had never been about blood at all.
Unless there was another secret still buried beneath the Ashford name.
