Chapter 12 - The Truth About the Shot

Alex survived because the bullet had struck his shoulder rather than his chest.
Elena pressed her hands against the wound while Vanessa shouted for an ambulance. Richard escaped in the confusion, leaving his guards behind.
By sunrise, federal agents had secured the Whitmore estate.
The ledgers and recording were in official custody, and Margaret had arranged for independent forensic experts to verify their authenticity.
But Elena refused to leave the hospital.
She sat beside Alex's bed, watching the monitors rise and fall.
When he finally opened his eyes, his first words were not about the pain.
“Did we get him?”
Elena let out a shaky laugh.
“We got the evidence. That's a start.”
He looked toward the window.
“My mother tried to tell the truth, and it cost her everything.”
“Not everything,” Elena said softly. “She saved you. And she helped save me.”
Alex turned his head toward her.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then he asked the question that had been haunting him.
“Do you hate me?”
Elena frowned.
“Why would I hate you?”
“Because I was cruel to you. At the ballroom, I treated you like you were nothing. I offered you money to humiliate yourself because I thought it would entertain people.”
She remembered the laughter, the phones, and the way the tray had trembled in her hands.
“I haven't forgotten.”
“I know.”
“You can't undo it by helping me investigate your father.”
“I know that, too.”
Elena studied him.
“Then what do you want?”
“To become someone who would never do that again.”
She reached for his hand.
“Start by being that person when nobody is watching.”
He nodded.
Later that morning, Vanessa arrived with a lawyer and a confession.
She admitted that Richard had threatened her family and manipulated her into helping him. She also revealed that she had found a letter from Alex's mother hidden among her father's business papers.
The letter had been written shortly before the clinic fire.
It contained a confession.
Elizabeth had discovered that Richard was using the foundation to move money from the Ashford estate. When she threatened to expose him, he arranged for the clinic's records to be destroyed.
But the final paragraph revealed something even more devastating.
Richard knows about the baby. He believes she will inherit everything one day. If anything happens to me, please tell Alex that I never abandoned his sister. I tried to find her every year.
Alex covered his face.
Elena sat beside him, tears slipping silently down her cheeks.
Their mothers had both been trapped by the same man.
One had raised Elena with love, never knowing the truth.
The other had spent years searching for the daughter she had been forced to surrender.
And both had died believing they had failed.
Vanessa placed another document on the bed.
“This was attached to the letter.”
It was a bank transfer authorizing payment to the mechanic who had serviced Arthur Ashford's limousine.
The signature belonged to Richard.
But beneath it was a second signature.
Vivian Ashford.
Elena stood slowly.
Her aunt had not merely hidden the truth.

She had helped pay for the silence.
And now, for the first time, Elena knew exactly whom she needed to confront.
