Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind the Ashford Name

Elena had spent years preparing for the night she would inherit the Ashford empire.

She had learned the language of investors, memorized the names of corrupt executives, and studied every property her grandfather had ever owned. She had also learned that the most dangerous people rarely looked dangerous.

Sometimes, they wore tuxedos.

Sometimes, they offered champagne.

And sometimes, they smiled like Richard Whitmore.

At two in the morning, Elena entered her grandfather's private library and locked the door behind her.

The room smelled of leather, cedar, and the faint lavender scent her grandfather had loved. His portrait hung above the fireplace, his expression stern but warm.

Elena removed a folder from beneath a loose floorboard.

Inside were financial records, handwritten notes, and a list of names.

Richard Whitmore appeared near the top.

Beneath his name was another.

Alex Whitmore.

Elena's fingers tightened around the paper.

She had assumed Alex was simply a spoiled heir who enjoyed humiliating people he considered inferior. But her grandfather had written a note beside his name.

The boy must never learn what happened to his mother.

Elena read it again.

Then she heard a knock.

Her personal attorney, Margaret Hale, entered without waiting.

“You need to see this,” Margaret said.

She carried a thick document folder.

“The inheritance transfer has been finalized. Every Ashford property now belongs to you. However, the auditors discovered something troubling in the estate's accounts.”

“How troubling?”

“Your grandfather's foundation has been transferring money to a company registered in the Cayman Islands. The payments began six months before his death.”

“Who authorized them?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Your mother.”

Elena went completely still.

Her mother, Catherine, had died when Elena was seventeen. For years, Elena had believed Catherine had simply grown tired of the family business and moved abroad before becoming ill.

“You told me my mother never worked for the foundation.”

“I told you she wasn't officially employed there.”

“Margaret.”

The older woman lowered her voice.

“Your mother was investigating financial fraud. She believed someone inside the family was stealing from the estate. Shortly before she died, she asked me to protect you.”

“From whom?”

Margaret placed a small recording device on the desk.

“Your grandfather left this for you. He instructed me to play it only after the inheritance became yours.”

Elena pressed the button.

A familiar voice filled the room.

“Ellie, if you're hearing this, then I failed to protect you.”

Her grandfather coughed.

“Richard Whitmore did not act alone. Someone in our own family helped him.”

Elena covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“The person who betrayed us is still alive. And when you discover who it is, remember one thing.”

A pause.

Then her grandfather whispered a name.

Elena dropped the device.

May you like

Because the name he spoke belonged to the one person she had trusted more than anyone.

Her own aunt.
