Chapter 10 - The Evidence Hidden in the Walls

The photographs sent the luncheon into chaos.
Guests whispered. Reporters pushed toward the stage. Richard demanded that the presentation be stopped, but the host insisted he had received the images from an anonymous donor.
Elena knew better.
Her grandfather had prepared this moment long before his death.
But why had he waited?
As security escorted Richard into a private room, Alex caught Elena's hand.
“We need to find that metal case.”
“Where?”
“My grandfather's old estate. My father keeps the original family archives there.”
They left through a service entrance and drove to the Whitmore country house, a sprawling property surrounded by stone walls and ancient trees.
The estate had been closed for years.
Inside, dust covered the furniture. Portraits of dead Whitmores stared down from the walls. Alex led Elena to a study where his grandfather had kept his business records.
“The case should be here,” he said.
They searched drawers, cabinets, and hidden compartments.
Nothing.
Then Elena noticed a portrait hanging slightly crooked above the fireplace.
Behind it was a small safe.
Alex tried his mother's birthday.
Rejected.
He tried his own.
Rejected.
Elena studied the engraved key in his hand.
“E.A. Maybe it doesn't mean Elena Ashford.”
“What else could it mean?”
She remembered the old photograph of Richard and Arthur standing beside the yacht.
The young woman between them was Alex's mother.
“Elizabeth Ashford,” Elena whispered.
Alex frowned.
“Who was Elizabeth?”
“Your mother's birth name, perhaps. Or the name she used before marrying your father.”
He entered the letters and numbers from the photograph's date.
The safe clicked open.
Inside lay a metal case, several bank ledgers, and a cassette recorder.
Alex opened the first ledger.
The payments were clear. Richard had transferred money to shell companies connected to the private clinic. The transactions began weeks before the fire and continued for years afterward.
Elena picked up the cassette.
A label was attached.
ARTHUR ASHFORD—FINAL TESTIMONY.
They pressed play.
Arthur's tired voice filled the study.
“If this recording is discovered, it means Richard has finally lost control of the Ashford estate.”
He paused.
“I knew about the adoption. I knew about the clinic. But I did not know who ordered the fire until Elizabeth came to me with proof.”
Alex closed his eyes.
His mother had known.
Arthur continued.
“Richard believed the child was the only person who could expose the truth. He intended to erase every record of her birth and use the Whitmore family's influence to ensure she remained hidden.”
Elena's hands trembled.
Then came a revelation that made Alex step back.
“However, Richard wasn't the only person who knew about the child. The order to destroy the records came from someone with authority over the entire foundation.”
A name followed.
One Elena had heard earlier that day.
Vivian Ashford.
Her aunt.
The recording ended with Arthur's final warning.
“Never trust the person who offers to protect you from a danger they created.”
A crash sounded downstairs.
Alex switched off the recorder.
Someone had entered the house.
Footsteps approached the study.
Then a familiar voice called from the hallway.
“Alex? Elena? I know you're in there.”
May you like
Vanessa.
And she wasn't alone.
