Chapter 5 - THE HUSBAND AT THE DOOR

:

Damian entered with two attorneys and four private security officers.

He looked exhausted.

His tuxedo was wrinkled.

His face was pale.

But his eyes were burning with something I had never seen before.

Fear.

He stopped when he saw me sitting upright.

“You're alive.”

I almost laughed.

“That disappoints you?”

“No.”

His answer came too quickly.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

He looked at Marcus.

“Get him out.”

Marcus didn't move.

Damian's jaw tightened.

“Clara, everything you think you know is wrong.”

“I know you married another woman.”

“That ceremony was staged.”

“You stood in front of four hundred people.”

“Because I had no choice.”

I stared at him.

“No choice?”

He walked closer.

“Victor found Noah.”

My mother stood.

“Don't you dare blame Victor.”

Damian looked at her.

The color vanished from his face.

“You're alive.”

My mother answered coldly.

“Disappointed?”

Damian stepped back.

For the first time, I saw the frightened boy hidden behind the billionaire.

“You both don't understand what Victor built.”

“Then tell me.”

He looked at me.

“The Thorne empire wasn't built from advertising.”

Marcus frowned.

“What was it built from?”

Damian whispered:

“Blackmail.”

He explained everything.

For decades, Victor had collected secrets from politicians, judges, celebrities, executives and financial institutions.

Thorne Media wasn't merely a media conglomerate.

It was leverage.

Every acquisition.

Every political favor.

Every sudden corporate collapse.

Victor had engineered them.

Then my father discovered the operation.

He tried to expose it.

Victor retaliated.

But before he died, my father created the Blackwood Master Trust.

He hid the evidence inside it.

Damian's voice cracked.

“And Noah has the key.”

“Why would you hurt him?”

“I didn't.”

“Then why did Bianca take him?”

“Because she knows Victor wants him dead.”

I stared at Damian.

“You're telling me you were trying to protect Noah?”

“Yes.”

I almost believed him.

Then Marcus received an encrypted message.

He opened it.

A single video began playing.

Bianca appeared on screen.

She was crying.

Behind her was Noah.

Alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Clara, don't trust Damian.”

Damian went rigid.

Bianca continued.

“The man standing beside you is not the real Damian Thorne.”

The video cut to black.

Nobody moved.

Then the hospital lights flickered.

My mother whispered:

“It's begun.”

“What has?”

She looked at Damian.

May you like

“The succession war.”

And somewhere beneath Manhattan, a vault opened.
