Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE TRUST

:

Damian called Marcus eleven times before noon.

Marcus ignored every call.

Instead, he came to my hospital room carrying a leather folder so old its edges had turned brown.

“You need to see this before you confront him,” he said.

I looked at the folder.

“What is it?”

“The reason your father left everything to you.”

My fingers stopped moving.

My father had supposedly died bankrupt.

That was the story Damian told me after the funeral.

He had said my father had made terrible investments, lost everything, and died ashamed.

I had believed him.

Because I had been twenty-four.

Grieving.

And Damian had been the man who promised to protect me.

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside was a copy of a trust agreement dated seventeen years earlier.

The beneficiary was not Clara Vance.

It was Clara Elizabeth Blackwood.

My breath caught.

“Blackwood?”

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother’s maiden name.”

I stared at him.

“My mother was never a Blackwood.”

“She was.”

He turned another page.

There was a photograph.

My mother stood beside a younger man I recognized immediately.

Damian’s father.

Victor Thorne.

I felt the room tilt.

“No.”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Your father and Victor Thorne were business partners. They created Thorne Media together.”

“That’s impossible.”

“It gets worse.”

He placed another document on the bed.

A corporate ownership chart.

The largest controlling interest in Thorne Media was not owned by Damian.

Not by Victor.

Not even by the public shareholders.

It belonged to the Blackwood Master Trust.

And the sole living beneficiary was me.

I stared at the numbers.

Fifty-one percent.

The controlling interest.

I had never been Damian’s financial dependent.

Damian had been living inside my inheritance.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Your father discovered Victor was siphoning money from the company. He threatened to expose him.”

“What happened?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Your father died three weeks later.”

Silence filled the room.

I remembered the funeral.

Damian holding my hand.

Damian telling me not to investigate.

Damian saying my father had destroyed himself.

My stomach turned.

Then Marcus pulled out one final document.

It was a private investigator’s report.

The first page carried a date from five years ago.

Three days before my wedding.

“Why was this investigation opened before I married Damian?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Because your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

He swallowed.

“If Damian ever married you, the trust was supposed to remain dormant.”

“Until when?”

Marcus looked directly into my eyes.

“Until Damian attempted to replace you.”

My heart pounded.

The wedding.

Bianca.

The fifth emergency dispatch refusal.

It wasn't coincidence.

Someone had triggered the trust.

Someone had been waiting for Damian to betray me.

I turned toward Marcus.

“Who?”

Before he could answer, my hospital room door opened.

A woman stood outside.

She was seventy years old.

Elegant.

Pale.

And unmistakably familiar.

My mother.

The woman I had been told was dead for eighteen years.

She looked at me and whispered:

“Clara, your father wasn't murdered because of money.”

May you like

She stepped inside.

“He was murdered because he discovered what Damian’s family did to our son.”
