Chapter 1 - THE EMPTY PENTHOUSE

At 5:17 the next morning, six black SUVs and eight industrial freight haulers rolled into the private driveway beneath Damian Thorne’s Manhattan penthouse.

No reporters were supposed to be there.

But someone had tipped them off.

By sunrise, cameras were already gathering outside the building.

Marcus stood beside my hospital bed with his phone pressed against his ear.

“Everything is moving exactly as instructed,” he said. “The trust has recognized your biometric authorization. Damian’s executive accounts are frozen. The penthouse is being inventoried.”

I closed my eyes.

For five years, I had lived in that penthouse as Damian’s wife.

For five years, I had watched him take credit for deals I negotiated, acquisitions I structured, and companies I quietly rescued.

He called me lucky.

He called me emotional.

He told everyone I was only useful because I knew how to make him look good.

He had forgotten one important thing.

I had built the foundation beneath him.

At 7:42 a.m., Damian finally returned from the Plaza Hotel.

He was still wearing his tuxedo.

Bianca walked beside him.

Her champagne-silk wedding gown had been replaced by a white cashmere coat, but she was still wearing the enormous diamond Damian had placed on her finger during their ceremony.

She was smiling.

Until the elevator doors opened.

The smile disappeared.

The penthouse was empty.

No art.

No furniture.

No wine collection.

No jewelry.

No private computers.

Even the massive gold-framed photograph of Damian receiving his first media award was gone.

Only bare concrete remained.

Damian stared.

“What the hell happened?”

His security chief swallowed.

“Sir… the trust administrators arrived before dawn.”

“What trust?”

Nobody answered.

Then Damian noticed something sitting alone on the marble floor.

A black envelope.

His name was written across it in handwriting he knew better than his own.

Clara’s.

He ripped it open.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed me lying unconscious in Trauma Suite 4.

On the back, I had written six words:

You should have checked whether I died.

Damian’s face went white.

Bianca whispered, “She’s alive?”

From my hospital bed, I watched the livestream through Marcus’s tablet.

For the first time in five years, I smiled.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because Damian had finally opened the first door.

May you like

And behind it was the truth about why I had married him.

A truth he had spent his entire life trying to bury.
