Chapter 10 - THE LAST SECRET

:
My mother had disappeared.
Victor was in custody.
My father was alive.
And the entire world was watching.
For three days, Thorne Media dominated every headline in America.
The Blackwood sisters had become the most talked-about family in the country.
But the truth was far more complicated.
My father told me why he had warned me against my mother.
“She wasn't the mastermind,” he said.
“She was the final accomplice.”
My heart broke.
She had helped Victor hide Victoria.
She had helped erase my father's identity.
But she had also spent eighteen years secretly protecting us.
Then my father revealed the final secret.
There had never been two Blackwood heirs.
There were three.
Noah was the third.
He wasn't Victor's stolen child.
He was my father's biological son.
The reason Victor had hunted him was simple.
The trust required all three heirs to approve its final clause.
Clara.
Victoria.
Noah.
Without all three, the empire could never be destroyed.
Daniel stood quietly beside me.
“I was created to keep you apart.”
I looked at him.
“And now?”
He smiled sadly.
“Now you don't need me.”
For the first time, I understood.
Our marriage had begun as a deception.
But somewhere along the way, his feelings had become real.
That didn't erase what he had done.
It simply made forgiveness complicated.
Six months later, I stood before the former headquarters of Thorne Media.
The skyscraper was being sold.
Every dollar from the liquidation was transferred into a foundation bearing my father's name.
Victoria controlled the investigative division.
Noah ran the medical foundation.
And I walked away from the empire completely.
I thought that was the ending.
It wasn't.
One winter morning, Marcus arrived at my new apartment with a sealed envelope.
“There was one final file in the vault.”
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of my parents twenty-nine years ago.
They were standing outside a hospital.
Between them was a newborn baby.
But it wasn't me.
It wasn't Victoria.
It wasn't Noah.
On the back, my father's handwriting read:
THE FIRST BLACKWOOD CHILD.
Below it was a name.
Evelyn.
I looked at Marcus.
“Who is Evelyn?”
He swallowed.
“We found her.”
“Where?”
He handed me a second photograph.
A woman stood outside a federal courthouse in Washington.
She looked nothing like me.
But she had my father's eyes.
Marcus whispered:
“She has been living under witness protection for twenty-nine years.”
My hands began shaking.
“Why?”
“Because she witnessed the night Victor took your father.”
I stared at the photograph.
The story I thought had ended was beginning again.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“Clara?”
“Yes.”
“You don't know me.”
“Who are you?”
Silence.
Then:
“I am Evelyn Blackwood.”
My heart stopped.
She continued:
“And your husband isn't the only person who lied about his identity.”
The line went dead.
I stood frozen in the middle of the room.
Outside, Manhattan continued moving.
Cars.
Sirens.
People rushing to work.
A city unaware that another Blackwood secret had just awakened.
I looked down at the photograph.
Then I smiled.
Because this time, I wasn't afraid.
Five years ago, I had been the wife who signed her own death warrant.
Now I was the woman holding the key to an entire dynasty.

And whoever had spent twenty-nine years trying to bury my family was about to discover one brutal truth:
Blackwood women don't stay buried.
