Chapter 8 - MY MOTHER CHANGED THE TRUST HOURS BEFORE SHE DIED

Dad remembered every word.
Of course he did.
Guilt preserves details better than love sometimes.
Mom had called him from a roadside motel just after midnight.
She told him she was done allowing personal betrayal to endanger the hotel.
She had instructed Miriam to restructure the land.
Dad’s authority would eventually expire.
Mine would grow.
Vanessa and Leonard would be barred from certain trust roles.
“You knew?”
I asked.
“Not the details.”
“But enough.”
“Yes.”
“And after she died?”
“I let it stand.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
He looked toward Mom’s desk.
“Because I knew she was right.”
For the first time that night, I saw something other than cowardice in him.
Not innocence.
But shame.
Real shame.
Then I asked the question I had avoided.
“Was Mom’s accident really an accident?”
Dad’s head snapped up.
“Yes.”
Too fast.
Miriam stepped in.
“The police report never found evidence of another vehicle.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Dad looked at me.
“It was raining. She lost control.”
Miriam said nothing.
I noticed.
“What?”
She hesitated.
“Miriam.”
“There was one inconsistency.”
Dad stared at her.
“What inconsistency?”
“You never knew.”
That frightened him more than it frightened me.
Miriam opened another envelope from the sealed file.
“Your mother’s car was inspected privately after the police released it.”
Dad stood.
“By whom?”
“An investigator she had already retained.”
Why would Mom have an investigator before the crash?
Miriam handed me a photograph.
Brake assembly.
Corrosion.
Tool marks.
My stomach twisted.
“No.”
“The investigator could not prove tampering.”
“Could not prove?”
“He believed it was possible.”
Dad grabbed the edge of the desk.
I looked at him.
“Did Vanessa know Mom had an investigator?”
“I don’t know.”
Then my phone rang again.
Marcus.
“We found Ethan Vale’s car.”
“Where?”
“Airport parking.”
I closed my eyes.
“They’re leaving.”
“No.”
His voice changed.
“They already did.”
Vanessa and Ethan had boarded a private charter.
Destination: Nassau.

But before boarding, Ethan had sent one encrypted email from the airport.
To Leonard Vale.
