Chapter 7 - MIDNIGHT WAS THE REAL DEADLINE

It was 11:18.
Forty-two minutes.
That was all.
Miriam immediately called the trust bank.
The transfer had not executed because control changed at 8:43.
But the instruction remained in the system.
“Cancel it.”
“We need written confirmation from the current trustee.”
“That’s me.”
“We’re sending it now.”
I signed within seconds.
The transfer disappeared.
Vanessa had missed the money by forty-two minutes.
Then Dad’s phone started ringing.
He looked at the name.
Vanessa.
“Answer it.”
He hesitated.
“Dad.”
He put it on speaker.
Vanessa’s voice was calm.
“Robert, where are you?”
“With Claire.”
Silence.
Then: “I told you not to go upstairs.”
I looked at Dad.
She knew about Suite 1701.
Of course she did.
Dad’s voice turned cold.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
Lie.
Marcus had watched her leave with Ethan.
I stepped closer to the phone.
“Hi, Vanessa.”
The line went quiet.
Then she laughed softly.
“You finally found the room.”
“I found more than that.”
“I’m sure you think you did.”
“You forged my signature.”
“No, Claire.”
No hesitation.
Interesting.
“I didn’t.”
I looked at Miriam.
Dad looked at me.
“Then who did?”
Vanessa answered.
“You should ask your father.”
Dad exploded.
“I didn’t sign anything!”
Vanessa stayed calm.
“That’s not what I meant.”
A pause.
Then she said, “Ask him what he did the night your mother changed the trust.”
Dad’s face went white.
I stared at him.
“What night?”
Vanessa hung up.
Dad would not look at me.
Miriam’s expression changed.
She knew something too.
“What happened that night?”
Dad sat slowly.
“Your mother and I had a fight.”
“About Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
He swallowed.
“She left the house.”
My chest tightened.
“When?”
“The night before the accident.”
My mother had died in a car crash twenty-two years earlier.
Dad had always told me she drove out early the next morning for a meeting.
Now I understood that was not true.
She had left because of him.
But Dad was not finished.
“She called me from the road.”
May you like
His voice broke.
“And told me she had changed everything.”
