Chapter 2 - SOMEONE HAD BORROWED AGAINST MY MOTHER'S HOTEL

I told the driver to pull over.
“Say that again.”
Thomas Reed did not hesitate.
“A forty-two-million-dollar commercial line was opened using Halcyon-related assets as security.”
“That’s impossible.”
“I agree.”
“Who signed?”
“Your father.”
“That doesn’t explain my name.”
“No.”
He paused.
“There’s a co-consent form.”
My stomach turned cold.
“Send it.”
Thirty seconds later, the PDF arrived.
I opened it.
There it was.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
My signature.
Except it wasn’t mine.
The shape was close.
The capital C was right.
The final T was wrong.
Mom had taught me to sign my name when I was fourteen, and I had never changed the ending stroke.
Whoever forged it had copied from a document.
Not from watching me sign.
I called Miriam immediately.
“You need to see what I just got.”
She read the first page in silence.
Then the second.
Then she said, “Do not call your father.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Do not call Vanessa.”
“Definitely not.”
“Do not respond to the lender yet.”
“Why?”
“Because this is not just fraud.”
Her voice became sharper.
“This document references Bennett Heritage Trust authority.”
I froze.
“That trust wasn’t active until tonight.”
“Correct.”
“So how did they reference it six months ago?”
“Someone knew the trust would eventually transfer to you.”
I stared through the windshield.
Only three people should have known the exact structure.
My mother.
Miriam.
And Dad.
Mom was dead.
Miriam was on the phone with me.
That left one answer.
But then Miriam said something that made the situation worse.
“Claire, there’s a fourth person who knew.”
“Who?”
“Your mother’s former business attorney.”
I remembered him immediately.
Leonard Vale.
He had disappeared from our lives less than a year after Mom died.
Dad always said Leonard retired.
Miriam’s voice dropped.
“He didn’t retire.”
“What happened?”
“He was fired.”
“By Dad?”
“No.”
She paused.
May you like
“By your mother.”
And according to the sealed file, Mom fired him because she believed he was secretly helping someone restructure the hotel behind her back.
