Chapter 1 - SIXTY-EIGHT MISSED CALLS

At 9:06 p.m., my phone began vibrating so hard against the leather seat that the driver glanced at me through the mirror.
I ignored it.
By 9:14, there were twelve missed calls.
By 9:27, thirty-one.
At 9:41, I had sixty-eight.
Dad.
Vanessa.
The hotel’s chief financial officer.
Three board members.
Two attorneys I had not spoken to in years.
And one number I did not recognize calling over and over with a Connecticut area code.
I turned the phone facedown again.
Miriam called on the private line.
“Claire, the transfer is fully recorded.”
“Everything?”
“The land trust, fifty-one percent voting control of Halcyon Hospitality, and the reserve fund.”
I looked out the window.
Manhattan lights slid across the glass.
“What about Dad?”
“He still owns his personal shares.”
“But he no longer controls the land.”
“No.”
“The building?”
“No.”
“The reserve?”
“No.”
“And the board?”
Miriam paused.
“You now hold appointment authority over four of seven seats.”
That was bigger than I expected.
Mom had planned carefully.
Maybe too carefully.
“Why didn’t I know that?”
“Because your mother instructed me not to explain the full succession mechanism until your thirty-fifth birthday.”
I sat up.
“What full mechanism?”
Miriam exhaled.
“There’s another document.”
Of course there was.
My mother never made a move without a second layer.
“What kind of document?”
“A sealed instruction letter.”
“From Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Why wasn’t it included in the trust file?”
“Because she didn’t trust your father to know it existed.”
That sentence landed quietly and hard.
Before I could ask anything else, the unknown Connecticut number called again.
I finally answered.
A man said, “Ms. Bennett, my name is Thomas Reed. I represent a lender tied to the Grand Halcyon.”
I frowned.
“We don’t have outside debt on the land.”
“That’s exactly why I’m calling.”
My chest tightened.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying someone used the hotel as collateral six months ago.”
May you like
I looked back at the glittering tower in the distance.
“And whoever did it signed your name.”
