Chapter 10 - I HAD UNTIL SUNRISE TO CHOOSE

The clause was brutal in its simplicity.

If fraudulent encumbrance tied to Leonard Vale could be documented, I could trigger permanent conversion.

The land.

The controlling hotel shares.

The reserve.

All locked inside an irrevocable trust.

Dad could never reclaim control.

Vanessa could never touch it.

Neither could I sell it personally.

The hotel would become something larger than inheritance.

A protected family asset with me as managing trustee.

Dad read the clause.

Then looked at me.

“If you do this, it’s permanent.”

“I know.”

“You’ll never be able to cash out the land.”

“I know.”

“It’s worth hundreds of millions.”

“I know.”

He stared at me.

“Your mother knew you’d choose the hotel.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“She hoped I’d choose what mattered.”

That distinction silenced him.

The decision deadline was sunrise because Mom had once believed people make different choices in darkness than in daylight.

That sounded exactly like her.

Miriam began preparing the documents.

We needed evidence tying the current fraud directly to Vale Advisory.

Thomas Reed could supply lender records.

Marcus had security footage.

The bank had Vanessa’s transfer instruction.

And Ethan had sent Leonard that email.

But we did not have the email itself.

Yet.

At 1:04 a.m., someone knocked on Miriam’s office door.

Marcus entered.

He was holding a black document case.

Dad stood.

“Where did you get that?”

“Ethan left it in the charter lounge.”

Inside were original hotel records.

Loan files.

Board authorizations.

And a flash drive.

I looked at Marcus.

“How did you get this?”

“He didn’t leave it by accident.”

“What do you mean?”

Marcus handed me a note.

Claire—

I didn’t know what my father and Vanessa were really doing until tonight.

I copied everything.

Don’t trust the board packet.

Ethan.

Dad sank into a chair.

Ethan had not fled with Vanessa.

He had boarded the plane to make her believe he had.

Then gotten off before departure.

“Where is he now?”

Marcus looked at me.

May you like

“Downstairs.”

And he wanted to tell us why Vanessa had really returned to our family nine years ago.
