Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

Ethan had buried Noah Caldwell ten years ago.

He remembered the rain.

The closed casket.

The priest’s voice.

His mother had already been dead for years.

His father was gone.

Noah had been the last person connected to Ethan’s childhood.

And Ethan had stood beside the grave thinking he was completely alone.

Now someone was telling him the grave might be empty.

Daniel ordered an exhumation request through attorneys and law enforcement contacts.

Maya sat beside Ethan in the quiet library.

“You don’t have to talk.”

“Everybody keeps telling me that.”

“Then I’ll tell you something different.”

“What?”

“You look terrible.”

Ethan laughed.

It surprised both of them.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Maya handed him coffee.

He took it.

“Why are you still here?”

She looked down.

There it was again.

That question she kept avoiding.

“Because I said I’d stay.”

“You agreed to seven minutes.”

“I’m bad with deadlines.”

Ethan studied her.

“There’s more.”

Maya’s fingers tightened around her cup.

Before she could answer, Daniel entered.

“We found Noah.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Federal witness records.”

Ethan stared.

“Noah entered protective custody ten years ago.”

Maya whispered, “So the overdose was staged.”

Daniel nodded.

“He was investigating Hale financial operations with Robert.”

Ethan’s eyes burned.

“My brother let me bury him.”

“To protect you.”

“Everyone keeps protecting me by lying.”

Daniel said nothing.

An address appeared on the screen.

A small town in Michigan.

Noah was living under the name Nathan Cole.

Ethan looked at Maya.

“I’m going.”

“I know.”

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Maya.”

“No.”

He stared.

She folded her arms.

“You’ve had a very bad twenty-four hours. I’m not leaving you now.”

Three hours later, they arrived at a modest lake house.

Ethan rolled toward the porch.

His heart was pounding harder than it had on his wedding day.

The door opened.

A man stepped outside.

Older.

Bearded.

But unmistakable.

Noah.

Ethan couldn’t speak.

Noah’s face collapsed.

“Little brother.”

Ethan hated the tears in his eyes.

“You’re alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re alive.”

Noah walked down the ramp.

Then knelt.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“For ten years?”

“Hale had people everywhere.”

Ethan shoved his hands away.

“You watched me bury you.”

“I watched from a car across the cemetery.”

That hurt worse.

Ethan turned his chair away.

Maya remained several feet back.

Giving him space.

Noah whispered, “Dad made me promise.”

Ethan looked over his shoulder.

“Dad knew?”

“Yes.”

Noah swallowed.

“Dad knew Hale was planning to kill him.”

Silence.

“And Charles?”

Noah’s expression hardened.

“Charles sold us out.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

The truth was becoming almost unbearable.

Then Noah looked at Maya.

His face changed.

“Who is she?”

“Maya Bennett.”

Noah went pale.

“What?”

Maya frowned.

“Do I know you?”

Noah stepped backward.

“No.”

His voice shook.

“But I knew your father.”

Maya’s cup slipped from her hand.

It shattered on the porch.

“My father died when I was twelve.”

Noah stared at her.

“No, Maya.”

He pulled an old photograph from his pocket.

A man standing beside Robert Caldwell.

Maya’s father.

Alive.

Noah whispered:

“Your father was the federal agent who built the case against the Hale family.”

May you like

And then he added the secret that made Maya forget how to breathe.

“He disappeared because someone inside the FBI betrayed him.”
