Chapter 11 - THE BROTHER WHO PULLED THE TRIGGER

Noah didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

Ethan stared at him across the lake house.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I can’t.”

Maya stood beside Ethan.

Daniel remained near the door.

Noah sank into a chair.

“Dad asked me to do it.”

Ethan’s face twisted.

“What?”

“He was dying.”

“No.”

“Not medically.”

Noah swallowed.

“Hale had kidnapped him. Tortured him for access codes. Dad escaped.”

Ethan could barely breathe.

“He came to me because he knew Hale had implanted a tracker.”

“Noah…”

“Dad said if they followed him, they would find you.”

Ethan shook his head.

“So you killed him?”

“No.”

Noah’s voice broke.

“Dad was already dying. Internal injuries. He knew he had minutes.”

He wiped his face.

“He made me stage the crash so Hale would believe the evidence died with him.”

Ethan remembered his father’s body.

The closed casket.

The funeral.

“How?”

“I gave him pain medication. He died holding my hand.”

Silence.

“Then I burned the vehicle.”

Ethan looked away.

For twelve years, he had imagined his father dying alone.

Now he knew the truth was somehow both better and worse.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Dad’s last words were: Keep Ethan out.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone loved deciding what I should know.”

Noah lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Maya moved closer to Ethan.

He took her hand.

He needed something real.

Something not built from secrets.

Daniel interrupted.

“We located Elaine.”

Maya’s head snapped up.

“Where?”

“Old Lakeshore Clinic. Abandoned property owned by a Hale subsidiary.”

Maya started toward the door.

Ethan stopped her.

“You’re not going alone.”

“They want you.”

“They already have my attention.”

Noah stood.

“I’m coming.”

Ethan looked at him.

For a moment, twelve years of anger stood between them.

Then Ethan nodded.

The clinic was surrounded by federal agents ninety minutes later.

Daniel had finally brought law enforcement fully into the operation.

They entered after confirming Elaine was inside.

Maya waited behind armored vehicles beside Ethan.

Gunfire erupted.

Then silence.

An agent emerged.

“We have her.”

Maya ran.

Elaine Bennett was carried out on a stretcher.

Alive.

Maya took her hand.

“Mom.”

Elaine opened her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize.”

“I should have told you.”

Maya cried.

“Later.”

Elaine squeezed her hand.

“No. Listen.”

She looked toward Ethan.

“Thomas is alive.”

Maya froze.

“My father?”

Elaine nodded weakly.

“He never died.”

Maya covered her mouth.

“Where is he?”

“Victor Hale has him.”

Ethan leaned closer.

“Why?”

“Thomas built a dead-man system.”

“A what?”

“If Victor or Martin kills him, every ledger, recording, and account file gets released automatically.”

Daniel frowned.

“So Thomas is insurance.”

Elaine nodded.

Then fear filled her face.

“But Martin found a way around it.”

“How?”

“He needs Thomas’s biometric key.”

Maya whispered, “Fingerprint?”

Elaine shook her head.

“Retinal scan.”

She looked at Ethan.

“Martin doesn’t need Thomas alive.”

Maya went pale.

Then Elaine revealed the final secret.

“Thomas isn’t being held somewhere else.”

May you like

She pointed toward downtown Chicago.

“He’s inside Caldwell Tower.”
