Chapter 10 - WHY VANESSA PUT MAYA IN THE BALLROOM

Vanessa did not deny it.

When Ethan confronted her by phone, she cried.

“I was trying to save you.”

“By putting Maya inside the wedding?”

“I needed someone my father didn’t know.”

Maya grabbed the phone.

“You knew who I was?”

“No.”

“Then why me?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because of your mother.”

Maya’s face hardened.

“What about her?”

“She contacted me three months ago.”

Silence.

Elaine Bennett had known Vanessa.

Vanessa explained quickly.

Elaine had discovered Martin Hale was searching for Thomas Bennett’s old evidence.

She knew Vanessa was frightened of her father.

So she approached her.

Together they created a plan.

Maya would be placed close to Ethan without knowing why.

If Vanessa could not safely marry him, Maya was supposed to deliver a message.

“What message?” Ethan asked.

Vanessa began crying.

“Check beneath Robert Caldwell’s chair.”

Ethan frowned.

“My father’s chair?”

“The wooden chair in his garage.”

Daniel immediately called the team searching Robert’s old property.

Twenty minutes later, they found an envelope taped beneath a workshop stool.

Inside was a key card.

Thomas Bennett’s FBI badge.

And a handwritten note.

Ethan read aloud:

If Thomas disappears, Elaine has the second ledger.

Maya closed her eyes.

“My mother has evidence.”

“That’s why they took her,” Ethan said.

Vanessa continued.

“My father discovered Elaine contacted me. He threatened to kill Ethan if I went through with the wedding.”

Ethan’s anger returned.

“So instead of telling me, you humiliated me in front of three hundred people.”

“I panicked.”

“You looked at my wheelchair.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I knew everyone would believe that was why.”

That realization hurt differently.

Vanessa had intentionally used Ethan’s disability as camouflage.

She had weaponized the thing she knew would humiliate him most.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Ethan said nothing.

Maya did.

“Sorry is something you say after stepping on someone’s foot.”

Vanessa went quiet.

Maya continued.

“You protected him from one danger by creating another wound.”

Ethan looked at Maya.

No pity.

Never pity.

Just truth.

Vanessa whispered, “There’s more.”

“What?”

“My father has someone inside Ethan’s company.”

“We know. Charles.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“Charles works for my grandfather.”

Ethan frowned.

“You said your father.”

“They’re not on the same side.”

Silence.

The Hale family itself was divided.

Victor Hale had built the criminal network.

Martin wanted control.

Charles worked for Victor.

And someone else inside Caldwell Freight worked for Martin.

“Who?” Ethan demanded.

Vanessa hesitated.

Then the call disconnected.

Daniel tried calling back.

Nothing.

Seconds later, a security alert appeared.

Vanessa’s vehicle had crashed near Interstate 90.

Ethan stared at the notification.

Maya whispered, “Was she killed?”

Daniel checked.

“No.”

Relief.

Then confusion.

“She wasn’t in the car.”

A truck driver had seen Vanessa enter another vehicle minutes earlier.

Security cameras captured it.

A black sedan.

The passenger door opened.

Vanessa got inside willingly.

The driver turned toward the camera.

Ethan recognized him.

His uncle Charles.

But Noah saw something else.

“Zoom in.”

Daniel enlarged the image.

Someone sat in the back seat.

An elderly man.

Victor Hale.

Alive.

And apparently working with Charles.

Ethan stared.

Then his phone rang.

Victor himself spoke.

“Mr. Caldwell.”

Ethan’s grip tightened.

“What do you want?”

Victor laughed softly.

“To tell you the truth.”

“About what?”

“Your father.”

A pause.

“Robert Caldwell wasn’t murdered by the Hale family.”

Ethan’s blood went cold.

May you like

Victor finished:

“Your father was killed by your brother Noah.”
