Chapter 5 - THE FIRE AT CALDWELL YARD

The warehouse was already burning when Ethan arrived.
Flames climbed thirty feet into the October sky.
Fire crews surrounded the property.
Employees stood behind barricades.
Daniel spoke rapidly into his phone.
Maya remained beside Ethan.
“You shouldn’t be this close.”
“You say that like tonight has contained a safe location.”
He almost smiled.
Then something exploded inside the warehouse.
Maya instinctively grabbed his shoulder.
Ethan covered her hand.
“I’m okay.”
She looked at him.
“I know.”
That distinction mattered.
She wasn’t treating him as fragile.
She was simply afraid for him.
A fire captain approached.
“Mr. Caldwell?”
“Yes.”
“Fire started in the northeast storage section. We found signs of forced entry.”
“Arson?”
“Looks possible.”
Daniel returned.
“The old driver training lot is behind Building Four.”
Ethan looked toward the flames.
“Not inside the burning building?”
“No.”
They moved around the perimeter.
The training lot had been abandoned years earlier.
Cracked pavement.
Faded yellow lines.
Ethan stopped near an old loading ramp.
“This is where Dad taught me.”
Maya smiled faintly.
“How old?”
“Fourteen.”
“That seems illegal.”
“It was.”
“Your father continues improving.”
Ethan looked at the ramp.
Then he remembered.
Robert had painted numbers beneath each dock.
One through twelve.
But there had once been a thirteenth.
A dock that existed before renovations.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“Dock Thirteen.”
“There is no Dock Thirteen.”
“There used to be.”
They found the concrete foundation twenty minutes later.
Buried beneath gravel.
Daniel used a pry bar to lift a steel plate.
Inside was a waterproof box.
Ethan stared at it.
“My father hid this fifteen years ago.”
Daniel opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
Bank records.
And one handwritten ledger.
Maya whispered, “You found it.”
Ethan turned the first page.
Names filled columns.
Payments from Hale-controlled companies.
Bribes.
Blackmail.
Illegal freight transfers.
Political donations.
Then Ethan found a familiar name.
Noah Caldwell.
His brother.
Beside it was a payment.
$250,000.
Ethan’s heart sank.
“Noah was paid by Hale.”
Maya leaned closer.
“Maybe he was undercover.”
“Or maybe he was part of it.”
Daniel kept reading.
“Wait.”
He pointed toward a coded notation beside Noah’s name.
R.C. CONTACT.
Robert Caldwell contact.
Ethan frowned.
Daniel said, “Your brother may have been working with your father.”
Sirens sounded behind them.
Then gunfire cracked from the darkness.
Daniel shoved Ethan down.
“MOVE!”
Maya screamed.
A bullet struck the steel plate.
Daniel returned fire.
Two figures ran between parked trailers.
Security rushed toward them.
Maya crouched beside Ethan.
“Are you hit?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
“I’m fine.”
The attackers disappeared.
But one had dropped something.
A phone.
Daniel recovered it.
The screen was unlocked.
One message remained open.
TARGET CONFIRMED. CALDWELL HAS LEDGER.
Below it was the sender.
V.H.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Vanessa.”
Maya stared.
But Daniel shook his head.
“Maybe.”
He tapped the profile details.
The number wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It belonged to someone else with the initials V.H.
An older contact.
Ethan read the name.
His blood turned cold.
Victor Hale.
Vanessa’s grandfather.
A man who had supposedly been dead for nine years.
Daniel whispered, “Either someone is using a dead man’s identity…”
May you like
Ethan finished the sentence.
“…or Victor Hale never died.”
