Chapter 13 - THE FATHER ETHAN NEVER KNEW

Ethan had spent thirty-eight years believing Robert Caldwell was his father.

Now his mother was alive.

His uncle was supposedly his biological father.

And the people who had built his identity were standing in his office with a hostage.

“No.”

Thomas Bennett looked at him.

“Ethan…”

“No.”

Maya crouched beside his chair.

“You don’t have to understand it immediately.”

He looked at her.

“Apparently I don’t understand anything about my life.”

Daniel opened archived birth records.

Margaret Caldwell had disappeared when Ethan was seventeen.

Everyone had told him she died overseas after a sudden illness.

There was no death certificate.

Only a memorial.

Another lie.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“Margaret and Charles had an affair.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Robert knew?”

“Yes.”

“And raised me anyway?”

“Yes.”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“Robert said being a father wasn’t biology.”

That nearly broke Ethan.

Robert had known Ethan wasn’t his son.

And loved him without hesitation.

Maya squeezed his hand.

“That sounds like your father.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

He looked at the security feed.

“Then Charles is just a man who donated DNA.”

Agents surrounded the executive floor.

Martin contacted Ethan directly.

“Come upstairs.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Martin continued through the speaker.

“Bring the ledger.”

Ethan answered.

“You’re surrounded.”

“So are the people you care about.”

He turned the camera.

Vanessa.

Margaret.

Charles.

Then another image.

A bomb device beneath Ethan’s desk.

“If federal agents enter, everyone dies.”

Maya whispered, “He wants the ledger.”

Thomas shook his head.

“He wants the names in it destroyed.”

Ethan made a decision.

“I’m going up.”

Daniel objected.

Maya didn’t.

Instead she said, “I’m coming.”

“No.”

She leaned closer.

“Remember the ballroom?”

“Yes.”

“You asked me not to leave.”

His throat tightened.

“I’m asking again.”

This time, Ethan nodded.

They entered the executive floor together.

Martin smiled.

“How touching.”

Maya looked at Vanessa.

Bruised but alive.

Margaret stared at Ethan.

“My son.”

“Not now.”

Pain crossed her face.

Fair.

Charles held the detonator.

Ethan looked at him.

“My biological father.”

Charles whispered, “Ethan…”

“Did you sabotage my brakes?”

Silence.

“Answer me.”

Charles began crying.

“I ordered the maintenance modification.”

Maya inhaled sharply.

Ethan’s face went cold.

“Why?”

“Martin said he would kill your mother if I didn’t.”

Ethan looked at Margaret.

She nodded through tears.

Charles continued.

“I never expected you to survive.”

That sentence emptied the room.

Ethan stared at him.

“You never expected me to survive?”

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Everyone is very sorry today.”

Martin extended his hand.

“The ledger.”

Ethan held it up.

“You want it?”

“Yes.”

“Then release them.”

Martin smiled.

“No.”

Ethan dropped the ledger into a metal trash container.

Then flicked a lighter.

Martin screamed.

“No!”

Flames climbed the pages.

Charles moved instinctively.

Daniel’s tactical team breached from the side stairwell.

Martin lunged toward Maya.

Ethan rammed his wheelchair into Martin’s knees.

Martin fell.

Maya kicked the gun away.

Agents swarmed the room.

Charles dropped the detonator.

Margaret grabbed Vanessa.

Within seconds, it was over.

Martin Hale was handcuffed.

Charles was arrested.

Everyone was alive.

Daniel stared at the burning ledger.

“You destroyed the evidence.”

Ethan smiled.

“No.”

He reached inside his jacket.

A flash drive.

“The ledger was copied two hours ago.”

Martin’s face collapsed.

Thomas laughed from the doorway.

But then one final secret surfaced.

Federal agents opened the flash drive.

At the bottom of Robert Caldwell’s final statement was a note written specifically to Ethan.

If Ethan survives, tell him the accident did not destroy his spinal cord completely.

Ethan froze.

Maya read over his shoulder.

May you like

There was more.

The surgeon was paid to falsify the prognosis.
