Chapter 7 - The Inheritance Nobody Mentioned

My son had been threatened before he was born.
That truth was worse than anything I had imagined.
"What inheritance?" I asked Grace.
She sat across from me in my office, both hands wrapped around a cup of untouched tea.
"Claire's grandmother established a trust long before you married. When Claire died, her share passed to Noah."
"How much?"
"Almost eighty million dollars."
I stared at her.
Claire had never cared about money.
She wore inexpensive jewelry, volunteered at children's hospitals, and once argued with me for buying her a sports car she didn't need.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"She was afraid the trust would become another source of conflict between your family and hers."
I leaned back.
"Who controls it?"
"That's what Claire was trying to discover. Her grandmother's original instructions required an independent trustee, but someone filed amended documents."
"Someone changed the trustee?"
Grace nodded.
"Claire suspected the documents were forged."
I picked up my phone.
"Marcus, find the original Whitfield trust agreement."
Grace shook her head.
"You need more than lawyers, Adrian. You need to understand why Claire was frightened."
"Then tell me."
She began crying.
"Vanessa told Claire that if she didn't cooperate, someone would make sure Noah never inherited anything."
The room seemed to grow colder.
"Did Claire tell my father?"
"Yes."
"And?"
"He said he would handle it."
I remembered my father's expression at the hospital.
He hadn't looked merely heartbroken.
He had looked guilty.
That evening, Samuel Pierce finally met us at the chapel.
He was thinner than I remembered, with silver hair and a scar running beneath his chin.
"I disappeared because someone tried to kill me," he explained.
"Who?"
"Dr. Eleanor Shaw was involved in a scheme to redirect trust funds through shell charities. But she had help."
"Vanessa?"
"Vanessa's brother."
I frowned.
"She never mentioned a brother."
"His name is Richard Hart. He's a financial consultant. He arranged the transfers."
Samuel opened a folder.
"Claire discovered the scheme. She planned to deliver the records to federal investigators after Noah's birth."
I stared at the documents.
Then Samuel handed me a second photograph.
It showed Dr. Shaw entering a private parking garage.
Beside her stood Richard Hart.
And behind them was someone I recognized immediately.
My mother.
I looked up slowly.
"Why was Margaret meeting them?"
Samuel's expression darkened.
"Because your mother wasn't simply covering up what happened, Adrian."
May you like
He leaned forward.
"She signed the document that gave them access to Claire's medical records."
