Chapter 12 - The Third Person in the Room

The recording changed everything.

If Dr. Shaw hadn't authorized the final medication order, someone else had entered the hospital's system.

Someone with access.

Someone who knew the cameras would be disabled.

Someone who had waited until Claire was vulnerable.

I handed the original materials to investigators through my attorney.

Within forty-eight hours, detectives identified a former hospital administrator named Thomas Keller.

Keller had supervised medical records and electronic permissions at St. Catherine's.

He had also resigned eleven days after Claire died.

His financial records revealed a payment from a consulting company connected to Richard Hart.

But when detectives went looking for Keller, he had disappeared.

Again, someone was ahead of us.

That night, I found Grace sitting in the nursery while Noah slept.

She was reading Claire's letter.

"I wish she'd trusted you sooner," Grace whispered.

I sat beside her.

"So do I."

Grace looked at me.

"She loved you, Adrian."

My chest tightened.

"I loved her."

"I know."

For a while, we listened to Noah breathing.

Then Grace spoke again.

"I need to tell you something I've been hiding."

I turned toward her.

She looked terrified.

"After Claire died, I didn't apply to work here because your mother contacted me."

"What?"

"Margaret did reach out. But I had already decided to come."

"Why?"

Grace reached into her bag and withdrew another envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Claire holding a tiny pair of baby shoes.

On the back, my wife had written:

Grace, if anything happens to me, please find Noah. He deserves to grow up knowing that love doesn't end when someone leaves.

My eyes burned.

Grace wiped away a tear.

"I came because I promised her. But I stayed because I loved that little boy."

I took her hand.

"And now?"

Her voice broke.

"Now I love both of you."

The words hung between us.

For three years, I had buried every feeling that wasn't grief or responsibility.

But looking at Grace, I realized my heart had quietly begun living again.

I leaned toward her.

She didn't move away.

Our first kiss was gentle.

Almost frightened.

And when we separated, Grace whispered, "I don't want to replace Claire."

"You never could."

I touched her cheek.

"But you helped us survive losing her."

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Marcus.

"We found Keller."

"Where?"

"At Miami International Airport. Police stopped him before he boarded."

"Did he talk?"

"Yes."

I stood.

Marcus continued.

"He says Richard Hart paid him to change Claire's records."

"Then we have him."

"Not yet, sir."

"Why?"

"Because Keller says he didn't alter the final medication order."

My stomach dropped.

"Then who did?"

Marcus hesitated.

"He claims Vanessa Hart personally accessed the system using his credentials."

And then he delivered the final blow.

"He also says Vanessa was inside the maternity ward less than twenty minutes before Claire collapsed."
