Chapter 11 - The Sister Everyone Believed Was Dead

The address led us to a modest white house outside Fort Lauderdale.
No iron gates.
No armed guards.
Just wind chimes, blooming hibiscus, and a bicycle leaning against the porch.
I stood beside Grace, wondering how many more secrets had been kept from me.
"Her name is Lily Whitfield," Grace explained.
"Why did Claire never tell me about her?"
"Because Lily was seventeen when their family fell apart. Their grandmother's inheritance created a bitter legal dispute, and Lily disappeared into foster care after their mother's death."
"And Claire?"
"She spent years looking for her."
I stared at Grace.
"You knew?"
"I helped her search."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Claire wanted to tell you herself. Then she found Lily just weeks before Noah was born."
Grace knocked.
A young woman opened the door.
She had Claire's green eyes.
The resemblance nearly brought me to my knees.
"Adrian Romano?" she whispered.
I nodded.
Lily looked toward Grace.
"You found him."
Then she burst into tears.
Inside, Lily showed me a stack of photographs.
Claire at sixteen.
Claire holding a birthday cake.
Claire hugging a little girl with missing front teeth.
"I thought she'd abandoned me," Lily whispered. "But she never stopped looking."
I could barely speak.
"Why did you disappear after she died?"
"Because someone told me I was next."
"Who?"
"Richard Hart."
My fists tightened.
Lily reached beneath the coffee table and retrieved a small metal case.
"Vincent gave me this before he died. He said it could protect Noah someday."
Inside was a second flash drive and several original documents.
Lily explained that Vincent had recovered records from a private hospital archive and tried to persuade witnesses to cooperate with investigators.
Before he could finish, he suffered his fatal heart attack.
"Did he tell you what happened to Claire?" I asked.
Lily nodded slowly.
"He said Richard wanted Noah's inheritance controlled by someone he could manipulate."
"Vanessa."
"Yes."
Grace covered her mouth.
Lily continued.
"He believed Vanessa intended to marry you, become Noah's stepmother, and eventually gain influence over the trust."
My blood ran cold.
"Then Claire was killed for money?"
Lily shook her head.
"Claire discovered the financial scheme. But the hospital incident wasn't supposed to become a death."
"What does that mean?"
"According to Vincent's evidence, Richard wanted her frightened and discredited, not dead."
I stared at her.
"Then what went wrong?"
Lily opened an audio file on her laptop.
A man's voice filled the room.
Richard Hart.
"Shaw, you were supposed to scare her into backing down. You weren't supposed to lose the patient!"
Then came Dr. Shaw's trembling response.
"The order wasn't mine, Richard."
A long silence followed.

And then she whispered.
"Someone changed it after I signed."
