Chapter 1 - The Woman Behind the Slap

My mother had never been afraid of me before.
But standing beside the marble staircase that night, Margaret Romano looked like a woman who had just realized she had made the worst mistake of her life.
"Mom," I said quietly. "Why is Vanessa here?"
Margaret tightened her grip on the banister.
"Adrian, darling, everyone needs to calm down."
"That wasn't my question."
In my arms, Noah was trembling.
Grace stood near the living room fireplace, her cheek bright red, refusing to cry in front of my son.
Vanessa recovered first.
"Your housekeeper has been manipulating your child. She encourages him to call her Mommy. She acts like she owns this house!"
"Grace raised my son," I replied.
"She's an employee!"
I took one step toward her.
"An employee you thought you could hit?"
Vanessa's confidence faltered.
"Adrian, your mother agreed that someone needed to establish boundaries."
I turned toward Margaret.
Her silence confirmed everything.
"Take Noah upstairs, Grace."
Grace hesitated.
"Mr. Romano—"
"Please. He's frightened."
Noah reached for her immediately.
"Mama Grace, come."
Watching him disappear upstairs with the woman who had practically raised him, I understood something I should have understood years earlier.
Grace wasn't threatening my family.
She was my family.
Vanessa moved closer.
"Adrian, I love you."
"No," I answered. "You love what marrying me would give you."
Her expression hardened.
"You can't humiliate me over a nanny."
I removed the engagement ring box from my jacket.
"Then consider yourself fortunate. You're leaving without a wedding to cancel."
Margaret gasped.
Vanessa stared at me.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
"Enlighten me."
She glanced toward my mother.
Something passed between them.
Fear.
Not embarrassment.
Actual fear.
"Tell him," Vanessa whispered.
Margaret shook her head.
"Vanessa, don't."
I looked from one woman to the other.
"Tell me what?"
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You think Grace Miller just happened to walk into your house three years ago?"
The blood seemed to drain from my body.
"What are you talking about?"
Vanessa leaned close enough for only me to hear.
"Ask your mother why she personally selected Grace from forty-seven applicants."
I turned.
Margaret was crying.

And then Vanessa delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"Ask her what Grace's real last name was before your wife died."
