Chapter 4 - The Box Claire Left Behind

The bank opened at nine.

I arrived at eight forty-five with Grace beside me and two security professionals waiting outside.

For the first time in three years, Grace wasn't wearing her usual practical clothes.

She had chosen a cream blouse and dark pants.

Her cheek was still bruised.

Every time I looked at it, I remembered Vanessa's raised hand.

"You don't have to do this," I told her.

Grace glanced at me.

"Claire was my best friend. I've been waiting three years to do this."

"Then why wait?"

"Because she told me to protect Noah until he was old enough to speak about what he remembered."

I turned sharply.

"Remembered?"

Grace looked away.

"He was a newborn. Claire knew he wouldn't remember her death. She was talking about what might happen afterward."

Before I could ask another question, the bank manager approached.

Inside the private vault room, Grace inserted the brass key.

The narrow steel drawer opened.

Inside was a white envelope, a flash drive, a photograph, and a tiny gold bracelet.

I recognized the bracelet.

Claire had worn it on our wedding day.

My hands shook as I unfolded the letter.

Adrian, if you're reading this, something went terribly wrong.

I know you believe your family protects the people it loves. But there is someone close to you who has confused protection with ownership.

I discovered financial transfers that your father never wanted you to see.

I was going to tell you after Noah was born.

If I don't get the chance, trust Grace.

I lowered the letter.

Grace was crying silently.

"What transfers?"

She picked up the flash drive.

"Claire discovered money disappearing from a family trust. She believed someone was using charitable accounts to hide payments."

"Payments for what?"

"She didn't know. But she found one name repeated in the records."

Grace handed me the photograph.

It showed Claire standing outside a restaurant with another woman.

Vanessa Hart.

The photograph had been taken months before Claire died.

My heart pounded.

"Claire knew Vanessa?"

Grace nodded.

"They met at a charity fundraiser."

I stared at Vanessa's smiling face.

Vanessa had told me we first met two years after Claire's death.

She had lied from the beginning.

There was handwriting on the back of the photograph.

Vanessa is not who she claims to be.

Below that was a date.

August 11.

Six days before Claire died.

Then I noticed something else.

At the very bottom, Claire had written a phone number.

Beside it were four words.

Call if I disappear.

May you like

The number belonged to my father's former attorney.

A man everyone believed had died three years ago.
