Part 5: The Freezing of Assets

Part 5: The Freezing of Assets
By noon the following day, the shockwave from Elena’s public announcement hit the Whitmore family empire like a physical blow. Richard Whitmore sat in his private study, the air heavy with the scent of expensive cigars, staring blankly at the red text flashing across his tablet: All corporate lines of credit suspended. Asset review initiated by Aureum Dominion Holdings.
The Whitmore Group, a mid-tier real estate and development firm, had always survived on the back of massive, low-interest supply chain contracts and logistical support from Aureum Dominion. They thought they had secured those contracts through their sheer business genius and elite networking. Now, the terrifying reality set in: they had been surviving entirely on Elena’s silent, patient sufferance.
The heavy oak door to his study burst open. Diane strode in, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup, her perfectly coiffed hair slightly disheveled.
"Richard, do something!" Diane demanded, her voice rising to a frantic pitch. "My personal Amex Black card was just declined at the boutique on Fifth Avenue. The manager—a woman who used to kiss the ground I walked on—looked at me like I was a common thief! She whispered to her staff right in front of me!"
Before Richard could formulate a response, the encrypted landline on his desk rang. He answered it on speakerphone with a trembling hand. It was their chief financial officer, Arthur Pendelton.
"Richard," the CFO’s voice cracked, completely stripped of its usual corporate confidence. "It’s a bloodbath. Aureum Dominion just pulled all logistics and shipping guarantees. Our supply lines are literally frozen at the international ports. The cargo ships carrying our entire autumn inventory are being turned away. Worse... they’ve called in our short-term notes. We have exactly forty-eight hours to liquidate and pay two hundred million dollars, or they seize our entire corporate infrastructure."

Richard sank deep into his leather chair. The dark, tailored suit that usually gave him an air of unshakeable dignity suddenly felt like a heavy, suffocating shroud. He looked up at his wife, his voice dropping to a hollow, bitter whisper.
"What did you do last night, Diane? I told you to leave her alone. What did you do to that girl?"
