Chapter 10 - The Poisoner's Sentence

Six months later, the trial of Eleanor Sterling concluded in the New York State Supreme Court.
The courtroom was packed with press reporters, high-society spectators, and legal analysts. Eleanor sat at the defense table, wearing a plain gray prison jumpsuit. Her once-immaculate silver hair was messy and unstyled, her face pale and deeply wrinkled. Without her expensive designer clothes and high-society standing, she looked like a pathetic, defeated old woman.
Sarah sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Leo and Marcus.
Judge Katherine Mercer slammed her gavel down, restoring absolute silence to the courtroom.
"Mrs. Eleanor Sterling," Judge Mercer said, her voice echoing sternly off the marble walls. "Over the course of this trial, this court has witnessed a horrific pattern of calculated cruelty, financial fraud, and sociopathic manipulation. You poisoned a young woman who welcomed you into her life, destroyed your family's financial integrity, and engineered a web of deceit that ruined multiple lives."
Eleanor kept her head bowed, staring blankly at the defense table, no longer having the strength to offer defiance.
"For the charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and criminal poisoning resulting in permanent bodily harm," Judge Mercer declared, "I sentence you to twenty-five years in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility without the possibility of parole."
The courtroom erupted into quiet gasps and murmurs.
Eleanor collapsed into her chair, sobbing silently as court officers stepped forward to attach heavy iron chains around her waist and wrists.
As she was led away toward the holding cell doors, Eleanor lifted her head for a brief moment and caught Sarah’s eye.

Sarah did not look away. She stood tall, her posture regal, her eyes clear and unburdened. There was no hatred in Sarah's gaze—only the cold, final certainty of a woman who had completely reclaimed her life and swept away the monsters of her past.
Eleanor opened her mouth as if to scream one final insult, but no sound came out. The heavy iron doors swung shut behind her with a loud, final THUD, sealing her away from the world of luxury she had sacrificed her soul to maintain.
