Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Past

For nearly half an hour, Leo sat in silence, weeping quietly as the dark, twisted reality of his existence washed over him. Sarah did not press him. She sat patiently beside him, offering comfort without pity, waiting for him to process the terrifying web of lies Eleanor had spun around his life.

Finally, Leo wiped his eyes and looked up at Sarah. "If... if I am Eleanor's son... then who is Valerie's baby's father?"

Sarah took a deep breath. This was the darkest thread of the web—the discovery that had finally pushed her to execute her merciless revenge.

"Six months ago," Sarah said, "Valerie was introduced to Arthur through a private concierge agency. Eleanor personally arranged the meeting. Eleanor knew Arthur's business was failing, and she knew I was funding everything. But Eleanor wanted total control over the money. She needed a way to push me out without losing access to capital."

"So she brought in Valerie," Leo realized, his voice trembling.

"Valerie was paid by Eleanor to seduce Arthur," Sarah revealed. "When Valerie got pregnant, Eleanor assumed she could use the pregnancy to force a divorce, throw me out, and claim alimony and child support from my personal estate under the pretense that Arthur needed to support his new family. But Valerie wasn't just sleeping with Arthur."

Sarah pulled out a third laboratory report, signed by a forensic toxicologist.

"Valerie was also involved with Eleanor's private physician—a man named Dr. Julian Vance, no relation to me, who has been treating Eleanor for decades. The baby Valerie is carrying belongs to Dr. Vance. Eleanor knew this, and she used the fake pregnancy to execute her final play against me."

Leo looked at Sarah with terror in his eyes. "Why? Why did she hate you so much, Sarah? Why did she spend twelve years trying to destroy you?"

Sarah’s eyes hardened, reflecting an ancient, burning pain.

"Because twelve years ago, when I was twenty-seven, I didn't just contract a sudden, mysterious illness that left me infertile, Leo."

Sarah leaned forward, her voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper.

"Three weeks ago, I ran a comprehensive forensic screen on my archived tissue samples from the hospital where I was treated twelve years ago. I found high concentrations of a synthetic compound called Desethinyl-E2—an experimental endocrine disrupter that was quietly pulled from clinical trials in Europe twenty years ago."

Leo gasped. "Someone... someone poisoned you?"

"Eleanor was a senior consultant for the European pharmaceutical distributor that handled those trials," Sarah said, her voice dripping with venom. "She spiked my daily vitamins for six months after I married Arthur. She rendered me permanently infertile because she knew if I had a biological child with Arthur, her fake grandson—you—would lose your claim to the family trust, and she would lose her total psychological grip over Arthur."

Leo stared at Sarah in horror. "She... she destroyed your body... just to keep control?"

"Yes," Sarah whispered. "She stole my chance to ever carry a child. She called me broken. She insulted me for eight years in that apartment, calling me less than a real woman, while knowing that she was the one who had poisoned me."

Sarah stood up, her suit immaculate, her presence commanding and unstoppable.

"I stayed silent for twelve years because I thought I was protecting a family," Sarah said. "But yesterday, when she told me to leave so a 'real family' could take my place... I decided it was time to end the Sterling legacy once and for all."
