Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Treason

An hour later, Leo stood in the middle of Sarah's Tribeca penthouse. His eyes were wide as he took in the stunning view, the sleek modern architecture, and the peaceful, dignified atmosphere.
"She told me you had nothing," Leo whispered, sitting down across from Sarah on a soft cream sofa. "Eleanor always said you were leeching off my father's hard work. She said if you left, you'd end up in a shelter."
Sarah placed a warm mug of tea in front of him. "Eleanor saw what she wanted to see, Leo. Your father was terrified of losing his mother's approval, so he let her believe whatever made him look like the dutiful, successful son. But that isn't the reason I asked you here today."
Sarah reached into her leather briefcase and pulled out the remaining contents of the envelope she had left on the floor of the Upper East Side apartment—the documents Arthur had not yet fully understood.
She placed a certified medical report on the table between them.
"When Valerie moved into the apartment three months ago," Sarah began, her voice calm but grave, "she registered her prenatal care at New York Presbyterian Hospital—the exact hospital where my research division operates."
Leo frowned. "Valerie? What does she have to do with this?"
"As a senior research director, I have administrative access to high-risk maternal pathology panels," Sarah explained. "When Valerie was admitted for routine early-trimester bloodwork, her doctor requested a standard genetic screening to check for congenital markers. Because Arthur’s family has a known history of vascular complications, the hospital cross-referenced the fetus's DNA profile with Arthur's medical file on record."
Leo stared at the document. "And?"
"The fetus Valerie is carrying is not Arthur's biological child," Sarah said plainly.
Leo gasped. "What? But she told everyone... Eleanor was celebrating! She said Valerie was bringing the next Sterling heir into the world!"
"That's only half of the truth," Sarah said, her eyes turning dark with an icy intensity. "The DNA profile of the biological father did match a member of the Sterling family. But it didn't match Arthur."
Leo blinked, his mind struggling to process her words. "What are you talking about? There are no other Sterlings in New York except my father and—"
Leo froze. His face went pale as horror washed over him.
"No," Leo whispered, shaking his head rapidly. "No, Sarah, that's impossible. Tell me you're not saying what I think you're saying."
"The paternal genetic markers are an exact 50% match to Arthur's own Y-chromosome lineage," Sarah said ruthlessly. "Which means the father of Valerie’s child is not your father, Leo. The biological father is you."
Leo stood up so fast his chair nearly overturned. "That's a lie! I never touched her! I barely even talked to her! She was my father's girlfriend!"
"I know you didn't touch her, Leo," Sarah said gently, placing a steadying hand on his arm. "Because you are not Arthur's biological son either."
The room fell into an absolute, suffocating stillness.
Leo stared at Sarah, his jaw trembling, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps. "What... what did you just say?"
"Eleven years ago, before I married Arthur, Eleanor made sure I signed an extensive prenuptial agreement," Sarah revealed, her tone razor-sharp. "As part of that agreement, full medical histories were exchanged. I kept copies of every document. Last week, when I began preparing my legal exit, I re-examined the pediatric records from your birth."
Sarah opened a second folder and laid it flat on the table.
"You were brought into Arthur's life when you were eleven, told that your mother had passed away in Europe and that Arthur was your father. But Arthur is infertile, Leo. He has been micro-surgically sterile since childhood due to a severe case of childhood mumps."
Leo backed away, shaking his head in total denial. "No... no, no, no! That's impossible! Eleanor told me—"
May you like

"Eleanor forged your birth certificate," Sarah stated relentlessly. "You are not Arthur's son. You are Eleanor's secret biological son from an affair she had twenty years ago with a corporate investor in London. She raised you as Arthur's 'son' from a previous marriage to secure her control over the family estate and ensure that Arthur would never seek an outside heir."
Leo collapsed back onto the sofa, burying his face in his hands as his entire reality shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
