Chapter 9 - Justice in the Shadows

The downfall of the Sterling family was swift, brutal, and thoroughly publicized across New York's financial and social circles.
Within forty-eight hours of Eleanor’s arrest, Sterling Logistics officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. All company assets, including Arthur’s personal vehicles, high-end watches, and remaining bank accounts, were seized by federal marshals to satisfy the millions of dollars owed to Sarah's holding company and the state tax authority.
Arthur was left completely destitute. Without a dollar to his name and facing secondary charges for corporate negligence and tax evasion, he was forced to move into a tiny, dilapidated studio apartment in Queens, paid for by a local legal aid society.
Valerie, realizing that the Sterling fortune was nothing more than an elaborate illusion built on Sarah's hidden salary, packed her bags and vanished from New York overnight, fleeing back to her hometown in the Midwest to face the reality of raising her child alone.
Three weeks after the boardroom raid, Sarah sat in her private office at Vane Pharmaceuticals. The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across her sleek desk.
There was a soft knock at her door.
"Come in," Sarah said.
The door opened, and Leo walked in. He looked different than he had three weeks ago. The nervous, guarded posture he had carried his entire life was gone. He was dressed simply in a clean sweater and jeans, holding a leather folder under his arm.
"Hello, Sarah," Leo said softly.
"Leo," Sarah smiled, standing up to greet him. "How are you holding up?"
"I'm... better," Leo admitted, taking a seat across from her. "I finished moving into my new apartment near the NYU campus yesterday. The academic scholarship you helped me transfer to went through."
"I'm glad to hear that," Sarah said genuinely. "You deserve a fresh start, away from all of their toxic control."
Leo looked down at his hands, silent for a moment before looking up into Sarah’s eyes. "I went to visit Arthur yesterday. At his apartment in Queens."
Sarah raised an eyebrow slightly. "How is he?"
"He's a broken man, Sarah," Leo said quietly. "He spends all day sitting in the dark, staring at old photographs of the Upper East Side penthouse. He begged me to ask you for forgiveness. He said he realizes now that you were the only real, honest thing in his entire life, and that he threw you away for a ghost."
Sarah’s expression remained calm and detached. "Arthur chose his pride over his marriage every single day for twelve years, Leo. He didn't care about the truth until the money ran out. I have nothing left to say to him."
"I know," Leo said softly. "And I don't blame you. I told him I wouldn't be coming back to see him again."
Leo slid the leather folder across the desk toward Sarah.
"What's this?" Sarah asked.
"It's my legal application for an official name change," Leo revealed. "I'm dropping the name Sterling. I don't want any connection to Eleanor or Arthur ever again. From now on, my legal name is Leo Vance."
Sarah looked at the document, her heart swelling with an unexpected wave of emotion. Tears glistened in her eyes as she looked up at the young man she had spent eight years quietly loving and protecting as if he were her own son.

"Leo..." Sarah whispered, her voice caught in her throat.
"You were the only one who ever truly took care of me, Sarah," Leo said, his voice filled with deep, sincere gratitude. "You paid for my education, you protected me from Eleanor's venom, and you gave me the truth even when it was painful. You might not have given birth to me... but you are my real family."
