Chapter 8 - THE ACCOUNT THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE ME LOOK GUILTY

My forged signature was excellent.
Whoever created it had practiced.
The account received twelve transfers from entities connected to Sinclair Strategic.
Then money moved back out toward Ryan’s personal investment accounts.
On paper, it looked like Ryan and I were laundering corporate funds together.
For the first time since serving the divorce papers, I felt fear.
Not emotional fear.
Legal fear.
Daniel immediately contacted federal investigators.
I provided handwriting samples.
Tax returns.
Bank records.
Device logs.
Everything.
“Do not destroy anything,” he warned.
“I’m not Ryan.”
Ryan flinched.
Good.
He deserved to.
Then Priya found the account opening documents.
They had been submitted electronically from a Whitmore Development executive computer.
Thomas’s floor.
But the person who verified my identity had used information very few people possessed.
My mother’s maiden name.
My childhood address.
The name of my first dog.
Ryan knew those things.
So did Margaret.
Thomas did not.
I looked at Ryan.
His face changed.
“I didn’t open it.”
“Who did you tell?”
“No one.”
“Think.”
Then he remembered.
Vanessa.
Years earlier, during pillow talk, she asked about my childhood because she claimed she was “trying to understand why I intimidated her.”
I laughed when Ryan admitted it.
Not because it was funny.
Because adultery had apparently included a background interview on me.
Vanessa had enough personal information to pass identity verification.
When confronted, she admitted it immediately.
“I opened the account.”
Ryan went white.
“Why?”
“Lucas made me.”
Always Lucas.
But this time she produced proof.
Messages.
Instructions.
Threats involving Ethan.
She had created the account and forged my signature.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I looked at her.
“You stole my identity.”
“Yes.”
“You slept with my husband.”
“Yes.”
“You helped move stolen company money through my name.”
“Yes.”
“And now you want what?”
“Nothing.”
That answer surprised me.
She had already agreed to plead guilty to fraud and identity-related offenses in exchange for cooperation.
Her attorney expected prison.
She knew.
“What happens to Ethan?”
Her face collapsed.
“My mother will take him.”
Ryan looked away.
For all his failures, he loved that little boy.
I saw it.
That complicated nothing between us.
It simply made him human.
Federal investigators cleared me provisionally within days because login metadata, device records, and Vanessa’s confession supported the fraud.
Then they found something inside the account that none of us expected.
One transfer had not been authorized by Vanessa.
$200,000.
Deposited only two months earlier.
Source:
MARGARET WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST.
I stared at Ryan’s mother.
“What did you send money into an account you supposedly didn’t know existed?”
Margaret started crying.
Because she had known about the fake account.
May you like
For six months.
And once again, she chose to manage the secret rather than expose it.
