Chapter 3 - THE FIVE-MILLION-DOLLAR EXIT CLAUSE

The agreement was twenty-seven pages long.
Ryan called it a confidentiality settlement.
My attorney called it evidence.
Under the agreement, Vanessa promised not to disclose:
Ryan’s affair.
Ryan’s improper corporate approvals.
The false belief that Ethan was his child.
And something described only as “Project Harbor.”
In return, Ryan promised financial support.
The condo.
The trust.
And five million dollars if his marriage to me ended.
I looked across Daniel Mercer’s conference table.
“Why would she make more money if Ryan divorced me?”
Daniel adjusted his glasses.
“Because apparently the agreement was designed to discourage him from leaving her.”
That was almost funny.
My husband had built two relationships, and both women had been given reasons not to let him walk away.
Priya slid another document toward us.
“Project Harbor is the bigger problem.”
“What is it?”
“A riverfront redevelopment Ryan supervised through Whitmore Development.”
I knew it.
Nine hundred million dollars.
Luxury housing, retail, offices.
Ryan had worked on it for nearly three years.
“Sinclair Strategic received eighty-two million dollars in contracts.”
Daniel whistled softly.
“How much was inflated?”
“We’re still calculating.”
Priya tapped her screen.
“But at least eleven million appears unsupported by labor or materials.”
My stomach tightened.
“And Ryan approved those invoices?”
“Some.”
“How many?”
“Enough.”
I closed my eyes.
This was no longer a divorce built around cheating.
It was a corporate investigation with my husband standing directly in the middle.
Then Priya showed us internal emails.
Lucas Sinclair repeatedly sent invoices to Ryan.
Ryan occasionally objected.
Lucas responded with messages like:
DO YOU WANT CLAIRE TO SEE THE PHOTOS?
Or:
ETHAN WILL BE CONFUSED WHEN DADDY DISAPPEARS.
Blackmail.
Real.
But the replies mattered too.
Ryan still authorized the money.
No police report.
No board disclosure.
No attempt to tell me.
He chose concealment every time.
Daniel leaned back.
“You should assume company counsel will eventually discover this.”
“They already have auditors.”
“Then quickly.”
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A text:
WE SHOULD TALK BEFORE RYAN LIES TO YOU AGAIN.
A photograph followed.
Vanessa Sinclair.
No glamor.
No posed smile.
Just a woman sitting inside an attorney’s office.
Then:
I HAVE THE ORIGINAL PROJECT HARBOR FILE.
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
“Do not meet her alone.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
Two hours later, Vanessa entered the conference room with her own lawyer.
She looked at me for several seconds.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
She blinked.
“We’re not starting there.”
Fair.
She placed a red drive on the table.
“Lucas has been stealing from Whitmore Development for years.”
“And Ryan helped him.”
“Yes.”
“You helped him too.”
Her face tightened.
“Yes.”
“Why are you here?”
“Because my brother is about to blame everything on Ryan.”
I almost laughed.
“Your concern for my husband is touching.”
“It isn’t about Ryan.”
She looked down.
“It’s about Ethan.”
Then she opened a file.
A birth certificate.
Father: blank.
Next came the DNA report.
Then one more document.
A guardianship petition prepared by Lucas Sinclair.
If Vanessa were arrested or declared financially unfit, Lucas intended to take custody of Ethan.
“Why?”
I asked.
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because Ethan’s trust now contains almost three million dollars.”
I looked at her.
“That money was supposed to be Ryan’s personal money.”
“It was.”
“Was?”
She swallowed.
“Lucas added stolen corporate funds without Ryan knowing.”
May you like
If true, Ethan wasn’t just a child caught inside the scandal.
Someone had used a three-year-old as a laundering account.
