Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER WHO NEEDED RYAN TO TAKE THE FALL

Thomas Whitmore had always treated Ryan like a talented younger brother who needed supervision.

Apparently he had been supervising him straight into criminal liability.

The private investigators photographed Thomas meeting Lucas fourteen times over six months.

No official business had been scheduled.

No meetings appeared on company calendars.

Then Priya compared project approvals.

Ryan authorized inflated subcontractor invoices.

Thomas authorized change orders that created room in the budgets to pay them.

A partnership.

Except Ryan claimed he never knew.

I believed him only because the pattern proved it.

Whenever Ryan rejected an excessive invoice, Thomas approved an emergency project modification days later.

Lucas resubmitted.

Ryan, already terrified of exposure, signed.

They had trained him into compliance.

That did not make him innocent.

It made him useful.

Daniel asked Ryan:

“Did you ever suspect your brother?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Because apparently I specialize in trusting exactly the wrong people.”

I almost said including yourself.

I didn’t need to.

He knew.

Whitmore Development’s independent board called an emergency meeting.

Ryan was suspended immediately.

Thomas too.

Margaret was removed from the audit committee pending investigation.

The news leaked within hours.

WHITMORE EXECUTIVES LINKED TO PROJECT HARBOR FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES.

My divorce suddenly became public entertainment.

Reporters camped outside our house.

I moved into a hotel under Daniel’s advice.

Ryan moved to his mother’s guesthouse.

Not because I asked.

Because the divorce order gave me temporary exclusive occupancy.

For once, paperwork protected me.

Vanessa surrendered the red drive to federal investigators.

Lucas disappeared.

Thomas denied everything.

Then Ethan disappeared from preschool.

Vanessa called me screaming.

I nearly dropped my phone.

“What happened?”

“Lucas picked him up.”

“Was he authorized?”

“He’s listed as emergency family.”

“Call the police.”

“I did.”

Ryan learned within minutes.

He wanted to go himself.

I stopped him.

“Do not turn this into some heroic rescue.”

“That boy calls me Dad.”

“I know.”

“He’s scared.”

“I know.”

“Then how can you sit here?”

“Because Lucas wants you emotional.”

Ryan froze.

He finally understood.

The disappearance was leverage.

Just like everything else.

Police tracked Lucas’s vehicle to a storage facility outside Naperville.

Ethan was found unharmed thirty minutes later with Lucas’s assistant.

Lucas was gone.

But inside the storage unit were boxes of Project Harbor documents.

And one laptop.

On it was a spreadsheet titled:

EXIT PLAN.

Ryan’s name appeared beside:

PRIMARY LIABILITY TARGET.

Vanessa beside:

SECONDARY LIABILITY TARGET.

Thomas Whitmore beside:

PROTECTED PARTNER.

Thomas had not merely helped Lucas.

He had hired him to create a fraud scheme designed from the beginning to end with Ryan in prison.
