Chapter 4 - VANESSA’S VERSION OF MY HUSBAND

Vanessa did not ask me to forgive her.

I respected that more than tears.

She gave us her story.

Four years earlier, she met Ryan at a Whitmore Development charity event.

He told her our marriage was “complicated.”

Classic.

“He never said you were separated,” Vanessa admitted.

“Then you knew.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

No romantic revision.

They began the affair within weeks.

When Vanessa became pregnant, Ryan believed the child was his.

She did too.

Until Ethan was born and Lucas quietly raised doubts.

“Why did Lucas care?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Because Ryan was useful.”

Lucas realized his sister’s relationship gave him access to one of Chicago’s largest privately held development firms.

He pushed Vanessa to ask Ryan for subcontracting work.

She did.

Ryan approved the first contract.

Then another.

Then another.

“Did you know invoices were inflated?”

“Not at first.”

“And later?”

“Yes.”

“How much later?”

“About eight months.”

“And you stayed quiet.”

“Yes.”

Because by then she had a condo purchased largely with money Ryan moved from marital accounts.

Because she liked the life.

Because Ryan loved Ethan.

Because Lucas had evidence against all of them.

One weak decision after another until the trap felt permanent.

I understood the mechanism.

I did not excuse it.

Then Vanessa told me the part Ryan had hidden.

“He tried to confess to you once.”

I looked up.

“When?”

“Your fourth anniversary.”

I remembered that night.

Ryan took me to dinner.

He barely spoke.

At dessert, he said:

“Claire, there’s something about the company I need to tell you.”

Then his phone rang.

He left the table.

Returned twenty minutes later.

Said the issue was handled.

I had forgotten.

“What happened?”

“Lucas called.”

Of course.

“He sent Ryan pictures of Ethan at preschool.”

My blood ran cold.

“A threat?”

“Yes.”

If Ryan talked, Lucas said he would disappear with Vanessa and Ethan and release documents making Ryan appear to be the sole architect of Project Harbor fraud.

Ryan folded.

Again.

Daniel asked:

“Why come forward now?”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Because Lucas doesn’t need Ryan anymore.”

She opened another folder.

A planned sale of Sinclair Strategic.

Buyer:

Hawthorne Infrastructure Partners.

Closing value:

$64 million.

Once the sale closed, Lucas would leave the country.

The inflated invoices and fraudulent transactions would remain under Ryan’s approvals.

“He intends to make Ryan the fall guy,” Priya said.

Vanessa nodded.

“And me.”

I stared at her.

“And what do you want?”

“To keep my son.”

Not Ryan.

Not the condo.

Not money.

Ethan.

Then Vanessa looked directly at me.

“There’s something else you need to know about Margaret.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about Ryan’s mother?”

“She knew about Ethan before you did.”

I expected that.

Then Vanessa continued:

“She also knew he wasn’t Ryan’s.”

I stopped.

May you like

“How?”

“Because Margaret paid for the DNA test.”
