Chapter 5 - MARGARET’S PRIVATE DEAL WITH VANESSA

Margaret arrived at Daniel’s office the next morning wearing navy cashmere and the expression of a woman who had spent sixty-eight years assuming rooms would eventually obey her.

This one did not.

I placed the DNA invoice in front of her.

“Explain.”

She looked at Ryan.

Then at me.

“I wanted certainty.”

“When?”

“Eighteen months ago.”

“You arranged the test?”

“Yes.”

“Behind my back.”

“Yes.”

“That seems to be a family hobby.”

Ryan flinched.

Margaret ignored him.

She had suspected Ethan might not be Ryan’s because his blood type was incompatible with what Vanessa had claimed during pregnancy.

So she obtained a sample from a cup Ethan used at a family picnic.

“Family picnic?”

I stared at Ryan.

“You brought them around your mother?”

He looked sick.

“Twice.”

Another room inside my marriage I had never known existed.

Margaret received the result first.

Ethan was not biologically Ryan’s.

Instead of telling me, she negotiated.

With Vanessa.

Margaret paid her $300,000 to stay quiet about Ryan, surrender any future paternity claim, and stop appearing near Whitmore family events.

“Why?”

“Because I believed the affair would burn out.”

I laughed.

“You thought $300,000 would preserve my marriage?”

“I thought preserving the family protected everyone.”

“No. It protected your surname.”

She did not deny it.

Then Daniel asked:

“Did you know about Project Harbor?”

Margaret hesitated.

That was enough.

Ryan stood.

“Mom.”

“I knew there were irregularities.”

“How much?”

“Not the amount.”

“Did you report them?”

“No.”

“Why?”

She looked at her son.

“To protect you.”

Ryan’s face changed.

For once, he understood exactly how ugly that sentence sounded.

Margaret had used her influence as a senior Whitmore shareholder to redirect an internal compliance review eighteen months earlier.

The review might have discovered Lucas’s inflated contracts then.

Instead, she had it quietly closed.

“Do you understand what you did?” I asked.

Her voice became smaller.

“Yes.”

“No. Say it.”

Margaret looked at me.

“I protected Ryan from scrutiny.”

“And?”

She closed her eyes.

“I allowed the fraud to continue.”

There.

Truth.

Then Priya entered carrying fresh bank records.

“We found the source of the $180,000 Ryan transferred the morning he left.”

Ryan looked up.

“I told you that was personal money.”

“It was.”

For once.

The payment went to a private investigation company.

I frowned.

“Why?”

Ryan answered.

“I hired them to follow Lucas.”

That part was true.

But the investigator had found more than Ryan expected.

Lucas Sinclair was meeting weekly with someone from inside Whitmore Development.

Someone who had access to project budgets, audit schedules, and board calendars.

The photograph showed them leaving a restaurant together.

I recognized the man immediately.

Thomas Whitmore.

Ryan’s older brother.

The company’s chief operating officer.

May you like

Lucas had not infiltrated Whitmore Development through Ryan alone.

He had another Whitmore on the inside.
