Chapter 6 - The Hospital's Missing Signature

I drove to the hospital the following morning with Hailey secured in her car seat.

I hadn't slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vanessa's name beside my daughter's medical information.

The patient records manager met me in a small office.

“We stopped the request because the authorization didn't match our records,” she explained. “But someone supplied personal information that should not have been readily available.”

“Who submitted it?”

“An outside representative claiming to work with your husband's family office.”

I felt my hands go cold.

“Was there a signature?”

She placed a copy on the desk.

It looked like Liam's.

Almost.

The final letter of his surname curved incorrectly, and the date had been altered.

“That's not his signature,” I said.

The manager nodded. “We suspected it might be fraudulent.”

I requested copies of everything and asked the hospital to restrict access to Hailey's records. Then I called Liam.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“Where are you?”

“At the hospital. Someone tried to access Hailey's records using a forged authorization.”

Silence.

“Liam?”

“I didn't do it.”

“I didn't say you did.”

He exhaled shakily.

“I'll find out who was responsible.”

“No. I'll make sure our daughter is protected. You can decide what kind of father you intend to be.”

I ended the call.

That afternoon, a lawyer I had never met contacted me. He represented a former employee of Richard Reed's company.

The employee had discovered unusual payments connected to the business agreement Liam had signed.

He wanted to speak with me.

When we met, he placed a flash drive on the table.

“Your husband's affair isn't the only reason Richard Reed wants this marriage to end,” he said.

“What does he want?”

The man leaned forward.

“He needs Liam legally separated from you before a specific financial transaction closes.”

May you like

Then he gave me the date.

Our anniversary.
