Chapter 1 - The Envelope That Destroyed His Smile

Liam stared at the cream-colored envelope as if it were a loaded gun.
“What is that?” he demanded again.
I smiled, though my heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my throat.
“An anniversary gift.”
My mother stopped rocking Hailey. Across the table, Diane, Liam’s mother, lowered her coffee cup. Everyone knew something was wrong, but nobody knew how wrong things had become.
Liam reached for the envelope.
I pulled it away.
“Not so fast, sweetheart. I thought we should share this moment with the people who helped build our marriage.”
His expression hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
“Six days ago, you forgot to hang up your phone.”
The room went silent.
Liam’s fingers froze halfway across the table. For one glorious second, I watched the color drain from his face.
Then he laughed.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Is it? You told someone you hated me. You said you wanted a divorce so you could marry her.”
My father slowly set down his fork.
Diane looked from her son to me. “Liam, please tell me she misunderstood.”
He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
I placed the envelope in front of him.
Inside were printed messages, photographs, and a hotel receipt. Enough evidence to end a marriage.
But the last page was something he had never expected me to find.
It wasn't about his mistress.

It was about our daughter.
And when Liam saw the name printed at the bottom, he whispered, “Where did you get that?”
