Chapter 13 - The Truth No One Could Prove

The next morning, Rachel arranged for the birth record to be examined by an independent specialist.

Meanwhile, my father searched through the few documents my mother had kept from her early adulthood.

Inside an old photo album, he found a letter from Richard Reed.

It was dated more than thirty years earlier.

The letter described his mother's insistence that Margaret had given birth to his son. Richard wrote that he had tried to find the child, but every lead had disappeared.

My father had never seen the letter before my mother's death. It had been tucked behind a photograph of her and Richard standing outside a small seaside restaurant.

For the first time, I understood why Richard might have become obsessed with the Carter family.

But a theory was not proof.

Rachel warned us not to let the personal mystery distract us from the documented financial misconduct. We had evidence of suspicious transfers, forged authorizations, and attempts to access Hailey's records. Those facts could be investigated without resolving a decades-old family dispute.

Then the independent examination returned its preliminary findings.

The birth record had been altered.

The father's name had been added later, using a different typewriter and a different ink.

Someone had changed the document to make it appear that Richard had fathered a child with my mother.

Vanessa was stunned.

“My father kept this for years.”

“Perhaps he believed it,” I said. “Perhaps someone wanted him to believe it.”

We needed the original records to determine who had made the alteration.

Vanessa agreed to help investigators obtain the files from Richard's office.

That afternoon, Liam arrived with a confession of his own.

He admitted that he had known Richard was obsessed with the old family story. He had never believed it was true, but he had used Richard's interest to secure business support.

“You knew this man was dangerous,” I said.

“I knew he was ruthless. I didn't know he would involve you and Hailey.”

“You didn't ask enough questions because the answers might have cost you money.”

He didn't argue.

Then Rachel received a call from the forensic accountant.

The money trail had revealed something worse than a fraudulent account.

The original transfers had been authorized by an executive who reported directly to Liam.
