Chapter 11 - Vanessa's Confession

We met Vanessa the next afternoon in Rachel's conference room.
She arrived without an attorney and looked nothing like the confident woman in the hotel photograph. Her hands shook as she sat across from me.
“I know you hate me,” she began.
“I don't know you well enough to hate you. I know what you did.”
She accepted that without protest.
“I had an affair with Liam. I knew he was married. I wanted him to leave you.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because my father has gone too far.”
Vanessa explained that Richard had promised to help Liam's company in exchange for a future marriage arrangement. She had believed she was helping secure her family's influence, not participating in fraud.
When she learned that my personal information had been used to create the suspicious account, she questioned her father's staff.
Richard ordered her to stop asking questions.
Then she discovered that the hospital authorization had been submitted through a company administrator working for him.
“Did you request Hailey's medical records?” I asked.
“No. I asked Liam whether the baby had been tested because my father kept asking about hereditary conditions. I didn't understand why until later.”
“Why didn't you warn me?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I was afraid of losing everything.”
I didn't forgive her. Fear might explain cowardice, but it didn't erase the harm she had caused.
She handed Rachel a folder containing emails, payment records, and internal instructions.
“There are more documents at my father's office,” she said. “The originals.”
Rachel asked whether she was willing to provide a formal statement.
Vanessa nodded.
Then she turned to me.
“There's one more thing you need to know. Richard didn't choose Liam because of his company.”
“Why did he choose him?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because he believes Liam is connected to a family secret that could destroy his own reputation.”
She pushed one final document across the table.

It was a decades-old birth record.
And the name listed as the child's father was Richard Reed.
