Chapter 10 - The Signature That Could Cost Him Everything

Liam spent the next morning with his business attorney, trying to understand the agreement he had signed.
By noon, he called Rachel.
“Richard's lawyers say the amendment is enforceable.”
Rachel remained calm.
“That doesn't mean it is. We need the full agreement, the negotiation history, and evidence of any misrepresentation.”
Liam sounded desperate.
“What if I lose the company?”
I looked at Hailey sleeping beside me.
“What if I lose my freedom because someone put my name on a fraudulent account?”
He went quiet.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that his problems were not the center of the universe.
Rachel began coordinating with a forensic accountant. The records showed that the suspicious transfers had originated from a subsidiary controlled by Richard's investment group. Several documents had been created using credentials belonging to an outside administrator.
Vanessa's name appeared on the correspondence.
But there was a gap in the evidence. We couldn't yet prove she had directed the fraudulent transactions.
Then Liam's attorney discovered an email in the company's archived files.
Richard had instructed his staff to prepare a divorce-related announcement before the transaction closed. Vanessa was copied on the message.
The draft described her as Liam's future wife.
Liam stared at the screen.
“He promised me this would stay confidential.”
Rachel folded her hands.
“Your personal promises aren't the issue now. The question is whether you knowingly participated in anything illegal.”
“I didn't.”
“Then cooperate fully and let the evidence speak.”
That afternoon, I received a message from Vanessa.
She wanted to meet me alone.
Her words were brief.
You think Liam is the only person who lied to you. Meet me tonight, and I'll tell you what he never had the courage to admit.
I showed Rachel.
She warned me not to meet Vanessa privately. If we chose to hear her out, we would arrange a safe, documented setting.
I agreed.
May you like
But before we could respond, Vanessa sent another message.
Your daughter isn't the only child Richard has been keeping secrets about.
